This morning, Israel launched what it called a “preemptive strike” on Iran. Explosions were heard across Tehran, the United States confirmed its participation, and a state of emergency was declared across Israel. None of this should surprise anyone who has been paying attention.

The attack on Iran is not an isolated escalation but the logical extension of a doctrine that has governed Israeli policy for years: the belief that military force, applied with sufficient brutality and frequency, can permanently reshape the region in Israel’s favor. This doctrine began in Gaza, expanded to Lebanon and Syria, and now reaches Tehran. The geography changes, but the logic does not.

Since October 2023, the Israeli government has pursued what can only be described as regional domination through destruction. The aim is not regime change in any single country but something more ambitious and more reckless: the dismantlement of state capacity, the dissolution of institutional order, and the fragmentation of societies across the Middle East. Israel does not want functional neighbors. It wants a region too broken to resist.

This approach follows a Zionist principle that long predates Netanyahu: the “Iron Wall,” raised higher and higher, backed by a long hand that bombs, assassinates, surveils, and destroys. The architects of this approach believe that enough force, applied across enough fronts, will establish Israel as the region’s sole military hegemon, a power that sells security technology and surveillance systems to whatever remains of governments in the Middle East, all from behind the walls and fences it has built. This is the stated posture of a government in which figures like Ben Gvir and Smotrich are not fringe voices but decision-makers, and in which the fate of an entire region is subjected to the political survival needs of politicians with delusions of grandeur and biblical fantasies.

Look at the trajectory. In Gaza, Israel destroyed most of the Strip and murdered tens of thousands. The international community did not take a stand. Israel then repeated the same logic in Lebanon, bombing infrastructure, razing entire towns, destroying what it could. In Syria, while Syrians worked to rebuild their country after years of civil war, Israel occupied new territory, bombarded state assets, and exploited sectarian fault lines to divide and conquer. Every crime committed in Gaza that went unpunished was repeated elsewhere on a larger scale. The impunity built in Gaza became the template for the region, and now it reaches Iran.

The advocates of this war should stop lying and admit what this is. The real aim is to enthrone Israel as the only major military power with the only functional regime in the region, to tip the balance of power in its favor for decades, and to achieve through war what it could not achieve through schemes like the Abraham Accords, which lost any modicum of legitimacy after Gaza. Israel is a military base with a state, not the other way around. There is no meaningful civil society debate about this war, no trace of internal resistance to a campaign that will devastate the entire region. The democratic facade exists to shield the military apparatus from criticism in moments exactly like this.

We are past the point of no return. The fire that began in Gaza has engulfed the region and beyond, exactly as many of us warned it would, and today’s strike on Iran confirms that war and more war is the only trajectory on offer. The entire region will eventually find itself in a position where it either fully submits and surrenders to this regime OR fights to rid itself of it. There is no middle path being offered, and the architects of Israeli policy have made certain of that.

There are “educated” people around the world, especially in the West, who look at every catastrophe caused by Israel and consider it a worthwhile price for the realization of the Zionist project. If this is not a total dehumanization of millions of Palestinians, Iranians, Lebanese, Syrians, and everyone else caught in the path of this doctrine, then what is it? The international community has one obligation it has failed to meet at every turn: accountability through arms embargoes, sanctions, and the enforcement of international law. These are not radical demands but the minimum owed to the people of this region, who are not passive recipients of this destruction but political subjects with precious lives, histories, strategies, and the will to resist.

Palestinians warned the world. We said this fire would spread, that impunity in Gaza would become the model for the region, that the silence was not neutral. The world did not listen.

The diplomatic headlines this week are familiar. Trump’s Board of Peace met in Washington with $17 billion in pledges and one Palestinian in the room. Netanyahu threatened to resume the war if Hamas does not disarm within 60 days. Nineteen countries signed a joint statement condemning Israel’s de facto annexation of the West Bank. These are important developments, and I have written about them elsewhere.

But the stories that reveal the most about what is actually happening in Palestine right now are not the ones leading the news cycle. They are smaller, more specific, and more difficult to look away from. This week, I want to draw your attention to several of them.

The farmers who go to work under gunfire

Mohammed al-Slakhy returned to his family’s farmland in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood as soon as the ceasefire began last October. He and his family spent months clearing rubble from what remained of their greenhouses, preparing the soil, and planting courgettes. They are farming one hectare. Before the war, the family cultivated 22.

The other 21 hectares lie inside Israel’s expanding buffer zone, which now covers roughly 58 percent of the entire Gaza Strip. Mohammed’s single accessible hectare sits about 200 meters from the “yellow line,” the boundary of that zone. Israeli tanks approach regularly and fire. On February 12, tanks advanced into Salah al-Din Street and opened fire near his location.

On February 6, his neighbor and friend Khaled Baraka was shot and killed by Israeli forces while working his land in eastern Deir el-Balah.

Seventy-five-year-old Eid al-Taaban farms nearby. His land sits 300 meters from the yellow line. He told Al Jazeera: “Every time my sons go to irrigate the crops in the greenhouses, I just pray that they come back alive.” Eid’s grandfather farmed in Beersheba before 1948. The family has been farming in exile ever since.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, over 80 percent of Gaza’s cropland has been damaged and less than five percent remains available for cultivation. Before the war, Gaza was largely self-sufficient in locally consumed vegetables, eggs, poultry, milk, and fresh fish. That capacity has been destroyed. The farmers returning to what is left of their land are not engaged in a symbolic act. They are trying to rebuild a food system from almost nothing, under fire, with no guarantee they will survive the walk to the greenhouse.

The children who carry sacks instead of schoolbags

In Khan Younis, 15-year-old Mahmoud wakes at 5:30 in the morning in a crowded tent. He does not reach for a schoolbag. He picks up a rough burlap sack and heads into the streets to collect and sell whatever he can find. “The sack is empty now, but I feel its weight even before I fill it,” he said. “My back hurts before I even start walking.”

On al-Bahr Street, 11-year-old Layla walks back and forth selling cups of tea for one shekel. Her father has a physical disability and cannot work. The burden has fallen on her.

Ninety-four percent of Gaza’s schools have been completely destroyed. The schools that still stand are largely occupied by displaced families. Gaza’s GDP has collapsed by 83 percent. Yaqeen Jamal, an educational psychologist working with children during the war, described the situation plainly: rebuilding schools and resuming education “must be the top priority, because education is the last line of defence for people’s identity and future.”

Meanwhile, UNICEF estimates that at least 17,000 children in Gaza are unaccompanied or separated from their families entirely. Over 11,000 children recently participated in a UNICEF initiative called “The Gaza We Want,” where they were asked to draw and describe their vision for the future. Thousands of children, independently, drew the same things: clean streets, classrooms with roofs, parks where they could play. As UNICEF’s communications chief in Palestine put it: “These are not extraordinary demands. They are the fundamentals of childhood.”

Ramadan in the rubble

This is the third Ramadan since the war began, the first under the nominal ceasefire. The holiday is almost unrecognizable.

In northern Gaza City, 25-year-old Amjad Joudeh sits in his partially destroyed house. His happiest Ramadan memories are of walking hand in hand with his father and brothers to the mosque for Tarawih prayers. He lost his entire family, parents and four younger siblings, in a single air strike. This year, he goes to the mosque alone.

In the Bureij camp in central Gaza, 52-year-old Maisoon al-Barbarawi hung simple decorations from the ceiling of her tent and bought her nine-year-old son Hasan a small Ramadan lantern. She pointed to bullet holes in the tent’s fabric, left by a quadcopter drone days earlier. “I will pray that the war never returns,” she said. “That is my daily prayer.”

A writer in northern Gaza, published in +972 Magazine this week, described how the holiday once marked by lively streets, plentiful meals, and easy moments with loved ones now takes place “amid streets scarred by bombs and swallowed by darkness.” Over the past year, the writer’s mother, uncle, and grandmother all died from medical conditions that were likely preventable under normal circumstances.

The economics of Ramadan tell their own story. An Al Jazeera analysis found that a basic iftar meal for a family of six now costs about 150 shekels, roughly $48, up 90 percent from pre-war prices. During periods when Israel tightened the siege or closed the crossings entirely, food prices spiked by more than 700 percent. Annual per capita income in Gaza has fallen to $161.

Families who once prepared elaborate meals and visited relatives now organize their fasting days around aid distribution schedules. A Mondoweiss correspondent writing from exile described how the genocide “was not only the physical destruction of Gazans’ bodies and the annihilation of families,” but also “erased memories, traditions, and everything that reminds us of what we were.”

A five-year-old denied a bone marrow transplant

Mohammad Abu Asad is five years old. He was diagnosed with aggressive leukemia while living in Gaza, where the medical infrastructure could not treat him. His family moved to the occupied West Bank to access better care. When his condition deteriorated and he urgently needed a bone marrow transplant, a hospital in Tel Aviv agreed to perform the procedure.

In early February, an Israeli court rejected his petition to enter Israel, citing a blanket ban on the entry of all Palestinians from Gaza, regardless of where they currently reside.

This story did not make major headlines. But it captures, with painful clarity, how the blockade operates: not as an abstraction, not as a policy debate, but as a specific decision to deny a specific child a medical procedure that could save his life. The hospital was willing. The court said no.

Across the occupied territories, movement restrictions have reached their highest levels. At least 898 checkpoints of various types were identified across the West Bank in 2025. Israel has extended military orders restricting movement in and around the Tulkarm, Nur Shams, and Jenin refugee camps, designating them as “closure areas” off-limits to Palestinians without military permits.

What these stories share

The diplomatic summits, the billion-dollar pledges, the ceasefire negotiations: these receive the headlines, and rightly so. But the stories above reveal what those headlines tend to obscure. The ceasefire has not ended the killing. The buffer zone is making agricultural recovery nearly impossible. Children are working instead of learning because the entire education system has been destroyed. Families observe their holiest month in tents with bullet holes. A child with cancer is denied treatment by a court order.

These are not background details. They are the texture of a siege that continues to operate even when the cameras turn to Washington. They are the evidence of what policy language calls a “humanitarian situation” but what is, in fact, the systematic constriction of Palestinian life at every level.

The people in these stories are not waiting for rescue. Farmers are replanting under fire. Mothers are buying lanterns for their children. Teachers and psychologists are trying to rebuild schools from nothing. Children are drawing classrooms and parks. They are doing this because they refuse to let the siege define the limits of their future.

The question is not whether Palestinians will persist. They will. The question is whether those with the power to act, to enforce arms embargoes, to condition military aid, to hold Israel accountable for violating its own ceasefire, will do so before these stories become permanent.

The Week’s Lead

Between January 28 and February 11, 109 Palestinians were killed, 252 were injured, and 10 bodies were recovered from under the rubble, bringing the cumulative death toll since October 7, 2023 to 72,045 fatalities and 171,686 injuries, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. Those numbers arrived against the backdrop of a ceasefire now in its fourth month. Since the ceasefire agreement took effect in October 2025, 591 Palestinians have been killed, 1,591 injured, and 720 bodies retrieved from under the rubble. Airstrikes, shelling, and gunfire continue across Gaza, causing casualties and exposing civilians, including aid workers and medical teams, to deadly risks.

The headline diplomatic framing this fortnight has been the formal announcement of Phase Two of the Trump-authored peace plan. Phase Two focuses on demilitarization, technocratic governance, and reconstruction. The start of the second phase was announced in January 2026, despite the failure to fully implement the first phase, and the prospects for progress on the ground are slim. The Civil-Military Coordination Center, the body tasked with monitoring the ceasefire and facilitating aid, has failed to prevent persistent Israeli violations, with European partners calling it “directionless” and “a disaster.” In late January, Reuters reported that the CMCC’s senior military and civilian leaders had stepped down and had not yet been replaced.

Daily Reality

For the third consecutive year, Gaza’s population is facing winter amid widespread displacement, substandard shelter conditions, and overcrowded displacement sites. As of February 11, at least two thirds of the population, 1.4 million people out of 2.1 million, are estimated to be living in about 1,000 displacement sites, often in overcrowded settings and in tents that offer limited privacy and protection from the elements, according to the UNRWA Situation Report #209.

Between February 5 and 11, aid workers in Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis provided tents, tarpaulins, bedding, blankets, hygiene products, cereals, plastic sheeting, and clothes to 289 displaced families whose shelters and belongings were damaged by heavy rains. After cold, rain, wind, and floods, a new layer of misery has arrived for the displaced: days of sandstorms have blotted out the sky and deposited dust across tent camps. Samah, a mother of a four-year-old, described the rains to UNICEF: “When the water entered the tent, I panicked. I didn’t know what to save first: the children, the clothes, the blankets, or the food. Everything was drenched.”

Shelter materials inside Gaza, especially tents and tarpaulins, have nearly depleted. Since January 2026, partners have brought 864 durable flat-pack shelter units into Gaza, including 264 on February 10. That figure, against 1.4 million displaced people, illustrates the scale of the gap.

Since the ceasefire, nearly 827,000 population movements have been observed, including approximately 690,000 from southern to northern Gaza. The Israeli military remains deployed in over 50 percent of the Gaza Strip beyond the “Yellow Line,” where access to humanitarian facilities, public infrastructure, and agricultural land is either restricted or prohibited.

Water access remains at crisis level. Out of 14,000 cubic metres reportedly being supplied through the Gaza City Mekorot line, only 6,000 cubic metres are arriving, reflecting a significant water loss. The missing 8,000 cubic metres would be sufficient to support over 500,000 people based on the recommended minimum standard of 15 litres per person per day. Water shortages are particularly severe in high-density areas such as Al-Mawasi in Khan Younis, per OCHA Situation Report No. 66.

Health System

Twelve field hospitals are operating across Gaza. Throughout January, health partners provided an average of 170,000 consultations per week. No hospital is fully functional, while 39 percent of hospitals are partially functional. Among primary healthcare centres, approximately one percent are fully functional and 35 percent are partially functional.

On February 7, UNRWA reopened the Bureij Health Centre in eastern Middle Area, which had been closed since October 7, 2023. The centre served approximately 175 patients on its first day.

The health response continues to face major constraints, with key medical items deemed dual-use, including laboratory and imaging equipment, still not cleared, and access restrictions on national and international NGOs limiting health service functionality, referral pathways, and essential services including trauma care, sexual and reproductive health, mental health and psychosocial support, and child care.

More than 18,500 people, including 4,000 children, remain in urgent need of medical evacuation. At the current pace, Save the Children estimates that evacuating those in need could take over a year. UNRWA health teams recorded a significant increase in acute respiratory infections, with 9,613 cases reported between January 26 and February 1, compared to 8,963 the previous week. UNRWA also recorded an increase in acute jaundice syndrome connected to contaminated water, with over 480 cases reported since November 1, 2025.

On February 4, an MSF health worker was struck by a stray bullet inside a healthcare facility in Al-Mawasi and is in stable condition. On the same day, a Palestine Red Crescent Society paramedic was killed while providing emergency services in Khan Younis. An UNRWA staff member was killed on February 10 while walking on Salah Ad Din Street in Deir al-Balah when Israeli forces reportedly carried out an airstrike on a nearby target. UNRWA has now recorded 391 colleagues killed in Gaza since the start of the war, as of February 18, 2026.

What Mainstream Media Is Not Covering

The systematic demolition of the Jabalia school compound. On February 5, Israeli forces demolished an UNRWA school in Jabalia in North Gaza using explosives. The building was the last remaining structure in a compound of six schools. With its demolition, the entire compound has been destroyed. Between January and February, eight UNRWA schools in the militarized zone were reportedly demolished by Israeli forces. This is documented in UNRWA Situation Report #208, published February 11, 2026. The demolitions received scattered mention in field reports but virtually no dedicated coverage in major Western newspapers or broadcast outlets. The Jabalia compound is not the site of a single strike or a military engagement. It is a sequenced, deliberate erasure of an entire educational institution across several weeks.

The documented abuse of returning Palestinians at Rafah. The partial reopening of Rafah crossing on February 2 generated coverage focused on its symbolic significance. The abuse occurring inside it received far less. For three consecutive days, Palestinians returning through the newly reopened crossing reported a consistent pattern of ill-treatment, abuse, and humiliation by Israeli military forces. Returnees described being escorted to an Israeli military checkpoint where some were handcuffed and blindfolded, searched, threatened, and had personal belongings and money stolen. Several returnees also reported being offered cash to return to Egypt permanently or to work as informants for the Israeli army. This was documented by OHCHR on February 5, 2026. It is not an allegation. It is a UN Human Rights Office finding, and it directly implicates the crossing’s operation as a mechanism of deterrence against return.

The water pipeline collapse in Gaza City. The valve on the Gaza City Mekorot supply line was reopened on February 2 following repairs. However, of the 14,000 cubic metres reportedly being supplied, only 6,000 cubic metres are arriving, with infrastructure damage leaving over 500,000 people below the minimum survival threshold for daily water access. This specific calculation, drawn from OCHA Situation Report No. 66, has not appeared in Western outlet coverage. The focus has been on aggregate aid volumes. The disaggregated reality, that Gaza City’s primary water line is functioning at 43 percent capacity, has gone unreported.

The Numbers

The cumulative death toll in Gaza since October 7, 2023 stands at 72,045 fatalities and 171,686 injuries, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. 1.4 million people, two thirds of Gaza’s population, are living across approximately 1,000 displacement sites in overcrowded tent conditions. As of February 11, donor governments had disbursed approximately $212 million of the $4 billion requested under the 2026 Flash Appeal, representing five percent of required funding. That figure is not a bureaucratic shortfall: it means 95 cents of every dollar needed to sustain a coordinated humanitarian response for 3.6 million people has not arrived. Despite improved food deliveries, more than 100,000 children and 37,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women are projected to develop acute malnutrition through April 2026. At least 588 aid workers have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, including 391 UN staff.

PART TWO: THE WIDER PICTURE

1. Israel Approves West Bank Land Registration for the First Time Since 1967

On February 15, the Israeli cabinet authorized the opening of a land registration process in the West Bank for the first time since 1967, allocating an initial budget of $79 million for 2026 to 2030 and establishing 35 new government positions to conduct registration work in Area C, which covers approximately 60 percent of the West Bank. Peace Now described the decision as “a mega land grab of Palestinian property,” stating that it will result in the transfer of the vast majority of Area C to the state, leaving Palestinians with no practical ability to realize their ownership rights. The UN Secretary-General condemned the move. The mechanism converts military occupation into civilian legal title: once registered, land becomes a legal fact far harder to contest than a temporary military seizure. The decision affects an estimated 300,000 Palestinians living in Area C.

2. Operation Iron Wall Extended in the West Bank

On February 1, Israeli forces extended the military order linked to their ongoing operation “Iron Wall” in the northern West Bank until at least March 31, 2026. Over 32,000 people forcibly displaced from the camps of Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams are still unable to return home, with many finding their houses destroyed by Israeli forces. The operation, now entering its thirteenth month, has been described by UNRWA as “by far the longest and most destructive operation in the occupied West Bank since the second intifada.” Israeli Defense Minister Katz has stated that the West Bank operation applies “lessons learned in Gaza,” meaning prolonged deployment and infrastructure destruction inside refugee camps.

3. The CMCC Leadership Collapse and Its Implications

The senior US military and civilian leaders of the Civil-Military Coordination Center have stepped down, with the civilian lead returning to his post as US Ambassador to Yemen and no replacement named. European partners working alongside the United States at the CMCC have reportedly reconsidered their involvement, with diplomats calling the center “directionless” and “a disaster.” The CMCC was the primary institutional mechanism for monitoring ceasefire compliance and facilitating aid. Its hollowing-out, occurring precisely as Phase Two is publicly announced, means the architecture supposedly governing Gaza’s transition to reconstruction has no functioning operational center.

4. Israel’s Security Cabinet Expands Powers into West Bank Areas A and B

On February 8, the Israeli security cabinet endorsed a series of measures expanding Israeli control into Areas A and B of the occupied West Bank, including canceling a Jordanian-era law prohibiting the sale of Palestinian land to Jews, lifting confidentiality from land records, and expanding Israeli oversight powers into zones designated under Oslo for Palestinian administrative authority. Finance Minister Smotrich stated explicitly that the goal is to “bury the idea of a Palestinian state.” More than 80 countries condemned the measures as unlawful. Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan issued a joint statement condemning the moves “in the strongest terms” and affirming that “Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory.”

5. Israeli Budget Deadline Threatens Early Elections

If the Knesset fails to pass the 2026 state budget by March 31, the government dissolves automatically and early elections are triggered. The government submitted its budget two months late, itself a violation of Israeli law, and its prospects for passage are uncertain. Netanyahu’s coalition is functionally a minority government after the ultra-Orthodox Shas and United Torah Judaism parties withdrew active participation over the failure to codify military service exemptions for Haredi men. Current polling shows Netanyahu’s Likud at 25 to 31 seats depending on the survey, with no clear path to a governing majority with existing allies. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett remains his most credible rival, polling at 18 to 23 seats.

What to Watch

The March 31 budget deadline is the most consequential near-term political variable in the region. If Netanyahu cannot pass the budget, Israel enters an election campaign during active ceasefire negotiations, a reconstruction process with no operational coordination center, and an accelerating West Bank annexation program. Early elections would not slow any of these processes: both the Netanyahu and opposition blocs broadly agree that a Palestinian state is not on the table.

Phase Two of the ceasefire plan remains unstarted. The first phase’s primary deliverable, the return of all hostages, was completed in late January with the recovery of the last hostage’s body. What follows is supposed to be a negotiation about Gaza’s permanent status, Hamas disarmament, and reconstruction governance. None of those conversations have a functioning venue, a credible mediator with operational presence on the ground, or a timeline with consequences attached.

Watch the West Bank land registration implementation closely. The cabinet approved the policy and the budget. The actual registration notices to Palestinian landowners have not yet been issued. When they are, the legal challenges, the displacement pressure, and the international response will move from the diplomatic to the operational. That transition, from announcement to implementation, is where the story becomes irreversible.

الخلفية التاريخية لعلاقة اليمين الأمريكي بإسرائيل

منذ سبعينيات القرن العشرين تقريباً، تشكل محور محافظ داخل السياسة الأمريكية يرى في إسرائيل حليفاً استراتيجياً وأخلاقياً لا غنى عنه. في سياق الحرب الباردة، قدّم المحافظون، خصوصاً داخل الحزب الجمهوري، إسرائيل بوصفها «ديمقراطية صغيرة» تقف في مواجهة أنظمة عربية تُرى قريبة من الاتحاد السوفييتي أو من المعسكر الاشتراكي. هذا الإطار أتاح لليمين الأمريكي أن يدمج إسرائيل في سردية أوسع عن «العالم الحر» في مواجهة الشيوعية، بحيث صار الدفاع عن إسرائيل جزءاً من الدفاع عن الولايات المتحدة ذاتها في المخيال المحافظ آنذاك.

مع صعود «اليمين الديني» في الولايات المتحدة في نهاية السبعينيات وبداية الثمانينيات، ولا سيما بين البروتستانت الإنجيليين البيض، أضيفت قاعدة دينية قوية إلى هذا التحالف. كثير من الإنجيليين تبنوا ما يعرف باللاهوت الصهيوني المسيحي الذي يربط قيام دولة إسرائيل الحديثة بنبوءات توراتية، ويرى أن مباركة إسرائيل شرط لنيل البركة الإلهية. نشأت تنظيمات ضخمة من هذا النوع كان أبرزها «المسيحيون المتحدون من أجل إسرائيل Christians United for Israel» (CUFI) التي تقول إن عدد أعضائها يتجاوز عشرة ملايين، وتعمل كلوبي منظّم له حضور سنوي في واشنطن من خلال مؤتمرات ولقاءات مع المشرعين للضغط من أجل مواقف متشددة داعمة لإسرائيل.

خلال عقدي التسعينيات والألفية، تضافرت هذه العناصر الدينية مع صعود تيار «المحافظين الجدد» الذي تبنى وروج لسياسة خارجية هجومية ويعتبر حماية إسرائيل جزءاً عضوياً من مشروع أوسع لنشر «الديمقراطية الليبرالية» في الشرق الأوسط. بعد هجمات الحادي عشر من أيلول/سبتمبر 2001، برز خطاب «الحرب على الإرهاب» الذي مزج بين العداء لتنظيمات مثل القاعدة وحماس وحزب الله، وبين شيطنة أوسع للإسلام السياسي، الأمر الذي عزز السردية القائلة بأن إسرائيل والولايات المتحدة في خندق واحد ضد «الإرهاب الإسلامي» كعدو مشترك. في هذا السياق، جرى تقديم الانتفاضة الثانية، ثم الحروب المتكررة على غزة، عبر الإعلام المحافظ السائد بوصفها معارك دفاعية تخوضها إسرائيل ضد «الإرهاب»، مع حضور محدود لسرديات الاحتلال والحصار والاستيطان.

الأرقام تعكس متانة هذا الإجماع. استطلاعات «غالوب» منذ التسعينيات تشير إلى أن نسبة الجمهوريين الذين يصرحون بأن تعاطفهم في الصراع يميل أكثر إلى الإسرائيليين ظلت تتراوح بين ثلثي القاعدة الجمهورية وثلاثة أرباعها، لتصل إلى ذروة تقارب 87 في المئة عام 2018، في مقابل نسب ضئيلة للغاية تعاطفت مع الفلسطينيين.

في المقابل، أظهرت الاستطلاعات نفسها أن الديمقراطيين كانوا يتحركون تدريجياً في اتجاه أكثر توازناً، قبل أن يميل جزء متزايد منهم إلى التعاطف مع الفلسطينيين في العقد الأخير. أما داخل اليمين، فكان الصوت المعارض للتحالف التقليدي مع إسرائيل محصوراً في هوامش «اليمين الانعزالي» وبعض الليبرتاريين الذين يعارضون المساعدات الخارجية من حيث المبدأ، إضافة إلى بعض «المحافظين القدامى» الذين رأوا في هذا التحالف عبئاً على المصالح الوطنية الأمريكية، لكن تأثيرهم ظل محدوداً حتى العقد الماضي.

ماغا كظاهرة سياسية - تركيبها وخصوصيتها في الملف الإسرائيلي

رغم أن شعار «اجعلوا أمريكا عظيمة مجدداً» ارتبط في الوعي العام بصعود دونالد ترامب، فإن جذوره تمتد إلى حقبة أقدم كثيراً، بدءاً من الظهور المبكر لشعار «أمريكا أولاً» في أربعينات القرن الماضي، مروراً بإعادة توظيف فكرة «العظمة» على يد رونالد ريغان في الثمانينات. فقد صاغ ريغان في حملته لعام 1980 خطاباً قوياَ حول ضرورة استعادة عظمة الولايات المتحدة بعد ما اعتبره سنوات من التدهور الاقتصادي والضعف الدولي خلال إدارة كارتر، بل استخدم التعبير نفسه في إحدى إعلاناته الانتخابية قائلاً: «لنعد لأمريكا عظمتها من جديد»^[1]. ورغم أنه لم يعتمد هذه العبارة شعاراً رسمياً، فإنها اختزلت جوهر مشروعه القومي المحافظ الذي جمع بين نهضة اقتصادية داخلية وتأكيد دور أمريكا العالمي من موقع قوة.^[2]

وفي التسعينات، جاء بات بوكانان ليجعل التداخل بين فكرة العظمة وشعار «أمريكا أولاً» أكثر صراحة؛ إذ تبنى الشعار القديم علناً في حملتيه الرئاسيتين عامي 1992 و1996، مقدماً رؤية قومية انعزالية ترى أن استعادة القوة الأمريكية تتطلب إنهاء الحروب الخارجية، مقاومة التجارة الحرة، تشديد الهجرة، وتقليص نفوذ اللوبيات الأجنبية، بما فيها اللوبي المؤيد لإسرائيل.^[3] وبوكانان، بخلفيته كمستشار لنيكسون وفورد وريغان، أعاد دمج هذه العناصر في إطار فكري يجمع بين القومية الاقتصادية والحفاظ على الهوية المسيحية المحافظة ورفض التحالفات الدائمة، ليصبح أحد أوائل من ربطوا بين المفهومين في بنية فكرية واضحة داخل اليمين الحديث.^[4] وعندما ظهر ترامب، لم يكن شعاره «اجعلوا أمريكا عظيمة مجدداً» ابتكاراً منفصلاً، بل كان امتداداً مباشراً لهذه السلسلة التاريخية: أخذ لغة ريغان العاطفية حول «العظمة»، ودمجها بالمضمون الانعزالي الذي طوّره بوكانان تحت عنوان «أمريكا أولاً»، ثم صاغهما معاً في هوية سياسية شعبوية وقومية موجهة ضد النخب السياسية والتحالفات الدولية. وبهذه الطريقة أصبحت ماغا التعبير الشعبوي الواسع عن الإرث الفكري الممتد لشعار «أمريكا أولاً»، حيث تترافق الدعوة إلى استعادة العظمة مع أولوية التركيز على الداخل وتقليص الالتزامات الخارجية، بما في ذلك التحالفات التقليدية مثل التحالف مع إسرائيل.

مع مرور الوقت، تحوّل شعار ماغا إلى هوية سياسية-ثقافية لتيار واسع داخل الحزب الجمهوري: تيار يرفض النخب التقليدية في واشنطن، ويعبّر عن غضب الطبقات البيضاء من العولمة والهجرة والتحولات الثقافية، ويقدّم نفسه بوصفه صوت «الأمريكي العادي» في مواجهة «الدولة العميقة» والإعلام الليبرالي. على المستوى الاجتماعي، يتكوّن هذا التيار من ائتلاف متنوع يشمل العمال البيض من ذوي التعليم المحدود في الولايات الداخلية، والإنجيليين المحافظين، والمزارعين، وأصحاب الأعمال الصغيرة، إلى جانب جزء من البرجوازية الصغيرة الحضرية التي تميل إلى الشعبوية اليمينية.^[5]

في الملف الإسرائيلي تحديداً، مثّل وصول ترامب إلى السلطة لحظة ذروة غير مسبوقة في التاريخ الأمريكي الحديث. فقد قدّم نفسه منذ البداية بوصفه «أكثر رئيس مؤيد لإسرائيل»، وتعهد بنقل السفارة الأمريكية إلى القدس والاعتراف بها عاصمة موحدة لإسرائيل، وهو ما نفّذه فعلاً عامي 2017 و2018 رغم التحذيرات المتكررة من دبلوماسيين وخبراء أمنيين سابقين من آثار القرار على الاستقرار الإقليمي. كما اعترف بسيادة إسرائيل على الجولان السوري المحتل عام 2019، وطرح خطة «السلام من أجل الازدهار» ا لتي منحت إسرائيل عملياً ضوءاً أخضر لضم مساحات واسعة من الضفة الغربية، ثم رعى «اتفاقات أبراهام» التي طبّعت العلاقات بين إسرائيل وعدد من الدول العربية.

خلال إدارة ترامب الأولى لم يكن ملف إسرائيل مثيراً للجدل والانقسام داخل معسكر ماغا كما هو الحال الآن، إذ لم يكن القوميون والليبرتاريون ودوائر «أمريكا أولاً» يعتبرونه محوراً يستحق المواجهة مع بقية اليمين. فقد ظلّ يُنظر إليه باعتباره جزءاً من الحزمة الجمهورية التقليدية التي يمكن تركها دون صِدام، خاصة وأن قاعدة ترامب الإنجيلية المؤيدة بقوة لإسرائيل كانت تمثل ركناً رئيسياً في ائتلاف ماغا ولا يمكن تجاهل أولوياتها. كما أن خطوات ترامب المؤيدة لإسرائيل – من نقل السفارة إلى الاعتراف بالجولان ورعاية اتفاقات أبراهام – قُدمت لجمهور اليمين بوصفها قرارات لا تفرض كلفة دموية ولا تورطاً عسكرياً، بل انتصارات سياسية مجانية تعزز صورة أمريكا القوية. لهذا السبب بقي الملف الإسرائيلي في ولاية ترامب الأولى خارج دائرة التوتر الداخلي، قبل أن يتحول لاحقاً إلى نقطة انقسام مع صعود الخطاب الانعزالي وتغير المزاج داخل الأجيال الشابة من اليمين.

أسهم هذا المسار في تحويل ترامب إلى رمز مركزي للتحالف بين ماغا وإسرائيل، إذ استقبلت القاعدة الإنجيلية قراراته المتعلقة بالقدس بوصفها إنجازاً دينياً وتاريخياً طال انتظاره، ورأت فيه منظمات مثل CUFI قائداً حقّق ما اعتبرته إخفاقاً مزمناً للإدارات السابقة. وفي الوقت نفسه، وجد كبار المموّلين اليهود المحافظين في ترامب شريكاً سياسياً قادراً على ترجمة أولوياتهم، سواء في مواجهة إيران أو في تثبيت مواقف أمريكية أكثر انسجاماً مع مطالب الحكومات الإسرائيلية. وعلى مستوى الخطاب العام، لعب الإعلام المحافظ السائد، من برامج فوكس نيوز إلى منصات «ديلي واير»، دوراً محورياً في ترسيخ صورة ترامب كأوفر الرؤساء دعماً لإسرائيل، مقدّماً إياه باعتباره الحليف الأكثر ثباتاً لتل أبيب بعد سنوات من السياسات التي وُصفت داخل اليمين بالتردد أو التراجع.

مع ذلك، لم يكن معسكر ماغا كتلة متجانسة على الإطلاق. فمنذ اللحظة الأولى، حمل التيار في داخله توتراً بنيوياً بين الشعار الانعزالي «أمريكا أولاً» الذي يعِد بتقليص الحروب والالتزامات الخارجية، وبين الإرث الجمهوري التقليدي القائم على تحالف وثيق مع إسرائيل وشبكات الضغط المرتبطة بها. وإلى جانب هذا التوتر، برزت في أطراف المشهد أصوات من «اليمين البديل» وبعض الدوائر القومية البيضاء تبنت مواقف ناقدة لإسرائيل أو حتى معادية لليهود، وهي أصوات جرى تهميشها رسمياً من قبل قيادات ماغا، لكنها ظلت فاعلة في الفضاء الرقمي وبين الشرائح الشبابية الأكثر راديكالية. لم تتبلور هذه التناقضات آنذاك في صورة انقسام سياسي واضح أو تصويت مختلف داخل الحزب، لكنها شكّلت طبقة تحتية من التوترات التي ستجد مجالاً للتعبير لاحقاً عندما تغيّرت الظروف السياسية والإقليمية، ولا سيما مع حروب أوكرانيا وغزة وما رافقها من إعادة اصطفاف داخل اليمين الأمريكي.

بوادر التحول قبل حرب غزة – التوترات الجيلية واللاهوت والإرهاق من الحروب

قبل انفجار حرب الإبادة على قطاع غزة، ظهرت مؤشرات بحثية مبكرة على أن الإجماع الجمهوري المؤيد لإسرائيل ربما لا يكون صلباً كما يبدو من الخارج، خاصة عند النظر إلى الأجيال الشابة. كشفت استطلاعات الرأي التي نفذها شِبلي تلحمي وفريقه بجامعة ميريلاند، إلى جانب استطلاعات نفذتها مؤسسة «بارنا» بين الشباب الإنجيليين، عن تراجع كبير في مستوى الدعم لإسرائيل داخل هذه الفئة. ففي دراسة منشورة عام 2021، أظهر تلحمي أن نسبة الشباب الإنجيليين الذين يصرحون بأنهم يؤيدون إسرائيل في الصراع انخفضت من نحو 75 في المئة عام 2018 إلى حوالى 34 في المئة عام 2021، بينما ارتفعت نسبة من يؤيدون الفلسطينيين أو يرفضون الانحياز لأي طرف. ^[6]

هذه الأرقام كانت مثيرة للانتباه لأنها تناقض الصورة السائدة عن الإنجيليين ككتلة دينية-سياسية متجانسة في دعمها المطلق لإسرائيل. وقد فسّر تلحمي وغيره هذه الظاهرة بمجموعة عوامل؛ من بينها تعرض الأجيال الشابة لخطابات حقوقية وكونية عبر وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، وتراجع التدين المؤسسي مقارنة بتدين الأجيال الأكبر، ووجود حساسيات جديدة تجاه قضايا الظلم العرقي والتمييز، ما يسهل بناء تشابهات بين تجربة الفلسطينيين وتجارب جماعات أخرى مثل السود في الولايات المتحدة.^[7]

إلى جانب العامل الجيلي والديني، كان الإرهاق من الحروب الطويلة في العراق وأفغانستان يتسلل بعمق إلى وجدان قطاعات عديدة من الجمهور الأمريكي، بما فيها قاعدة ماغا ، حيث رأى كثير من أنصار ترامب أن هذه الحروب استنزفت موارد البلاد وأضرت بالطبقات العاملة التي تشكل قلب الحركة. لهذا وجد انتقاد ترامب الصريح لحرب العراق، واتهامه للنخبة الجمهورية التقليدية – الموصوفة برموز «المحافظين الجدد» – بأنها جرّت الولايات المتحدة إلى مغامرات خارجية مكلفة، صدى قوياً لدى جمهوره. وقد ترافق هذا الإرهاق مع إحساس اقتصادي متزايد بأن التحالفات الواسعة، والإنفاق الدفاعي في الخارج، يأتون على حساب تحسين أوضاع الداخل، وفرص العمل، والبنية التحتية، والرفاه الطبقي للناخب الأبيض من الطبقة العاملة. ورغم أن هذا المزاج الانعزالي لم يتحول في البداية إلى موقف مباشر مناوئ لإسرائيل، فإنه أسّس إطاراً فكرياً جديداً باتجاه مساءلة جدوى أي التزام خارجي لا يقدم فائدة ملموسة للمواطن الأميركي.

ومع انتقال الرئاسة إلى جو بايدن، برز هذا المزاج بقوة أكبر في معارضة شريحة واسعة من اليمين الشعبوي لدعم الولايات المتحدة لأوكرانيا، إذ عُدَّت الحرب هناك مثالاً إضافياً على الإنفاق الخارجي غير الضروري، وتعميق الأولويات العالمية على حساب الأزمات الاقتصادية المحلية. هذه اللحظة سمحت لخطاب «أمريكا أولاً» بأن يتحول من مجرد نقد تاريخي لحرب العراق إلى اعتراض واسع على استمرار الإنفاق الخارجي، وفتحت الباب أمام ربط التحالفات التقليدية – ومنها العلاقة الخاصة مع إسرائيل – بسؤال جديد: ماذا تربح أمريكا فعلياً من هذه الالتزامات، وما الثمن الذي يدفعه المواطن في الداخل؟

حرب غزة كصدمة كاشفة - تحولات في الرأي العام وانقسامات يمينية

شكّلت حرب إسرائيل الابادية على قطاع غزة التي اندلعت بعد هجوم «طوفان الأقصى» في أكتوبر 2023 نقطة تحوّل مفصلية في اتجاهات الرأي العام الأمريكي وفي الجدل الداخلي داخل اليمين المحافظ. في الأسابيع الأولى للحرب، أظهرت استطلاعات عدة أن أغلبية الأمريكيين، بما في ذلك نسبة كبيرة من الديمقراطيين، رأت أن مسؤولية اندلاع المواجهة تقع بدرجة كبيرة على حماس، وأن لإسرائيل الحق في الرد العسكري. لكن مع اتساع نطاق الدمار وسقوط عشرات آلاف الضحايا في غزة، وتفاقم الأزمة الإنسانية إلى مستويات غير مسبوقة، بدأت الأرقام تميل في الاتجاه المعاكس.^[8]

بحسب استطلاع أجرته «غالوب» في مارس 2024، عبر غالبية الأمريكيين لأول مرة عن عدم رضاهم عن أداء إسرائيل العسكري في غزة، وانخفضت نسبة من يصرّحون بتأييدهم للعمليات العسكرية إلى أقل من النصف. ^[9] وفي استطلاع أحدث أجرته المؤسسة نفسها في يوليو 2025، لم تتجاوز نسبة الأمريكيين الذين قالوا إنهم يدعمون العمل العسكري الإسرائيلي في غزة 32 في المئة، مقابل أغلبية تميل إلى الرفض أو عدم التأييد. كما تراجع مستوى التعاطف الكلي مع إسرائيل في الصراع إلى نحو 46 في المئة، وهو أدنى مستوى منذ ربع قرن على الأقل في سلسلة قياسات «غالوب»، بينما ارتفعت نسبة المتعاطفين مع الفلسطينيين إلى حوالي الثلث.^[10]

استطلاعات أخرى، مثل تلك التي أجراها «مجلس شيكاغو للشؤون العالمية»، أظهرت أن نسبة متزايدة من الأمريكيين، وخصوصاً بين الديمقراطيين والمستقلين، تعتقد أن الولايات المتحدة «تدعم إسرائيل أكثر مما ينبغي» في هذه الحرب، وأن هناك تقصيراً في الدعم الإنساني لمدنيي غزة. وأظهر استطلاع نشره موقع «Responsible Statecraft» أن 41 في المئة من الأمريكيين يوافقون على أن إسرائيل ترتكب أفعالاً يمكن وصفها بالإبادة أو «الإبادة الجماعية»، وأن التغير في مواقف الشباب الجمهوريين كان «مذهلاً» بحسب تعبير الباحث المشرف على الاستطلاع، حيث لم تتجاوز نسبة المتعاطفين مع إسرائيل بين الجمهوريين من عمر 18 إلى 34 عاماً 24 في المئة، مقارنة بنحو 52 في المئة بين الجمهوريين الأكبر سناً.^[11]

ورغم هذه التحولات، بقي الانقسام الحزبي التقليدي قائماً، إذ حافظ الجمهوريون إجمالاً على مستويات تعاطف أعلى مع إسرائيل مقارنة بالديمقراطيين، لكن الفجوة بين كبار السن والشباب داخل الحزب الجمهوري صارت لافتة وفي اتساع مستمر. بعض استطلاعات «غالوب» وتحليلات «بروكينغز» و«جامعة ميريلاند» تشير إلى أن تآكل الدعم لإسرائيل يمضي بوتيرة أسرع بين الشباب في الحزبين، وأن جزءاً من الناخبين الشباب المتعاطفين مع ماغا يجمعون بين مواقف محافظة ثقافياً واجتماعياً في السياق المحلي الأميركي من جهة، وميل أكبر إلى التشكيك في جدوى الحروب والتحالفات المكلفة في الخارج، بما في ذلك التحالف مع إسرائيل، من جهة أخرى.^[12]

لقد كشفت حرب الإبادة الإسرائيلية على غزة، إلى جانب امتداد العمليات العسكرية الإسرائيلية إلى بلدان أخرى في الشرق الأوسط، عن تمايز واضح بين مستويين داخل اليمين الأمريكي. فمن جهة، التزمت القيادة الجمهورية التقليدية – سواء في الإدارة أو في الكونغرس، إضافة إلى رموز التيار المحافظ من إعلاميين ودعاة ومفكرين – بخطاب داعم لإسرائيل دون تحفظ، مؤكدة أولوية التحالف التقليدي ومبررة مسار الحرب. ومن جهة أخرى، برزت داخل الإعلام الشعبوي والشبكات الاجتماعية المرتبطة بتيار ماغا أصوات مؤثرة أخذت تشكك في هذه السياسات، مستخدمة لغة نقدية غير مسبوقة تجاه إسرائيل والجهات الداعمة لها داخل الولايات المتحدة، ما كشف عن بوادر انقسام داخلي يتجاوز ما كان مألوفاً في المراحل السابقة. لقد أصبح المشهد يتجاوز مجرد أصوات متمرّدة على هامش المعسكر المحافظ، ليتحوّل إلى ظاهرة أكثر رسوخاً وتأثيراً؛ وهو ما يستدعي التوقف عند أبرز الوجوه التي تمثل هذا التحوّل اليوم، واستعراض حجم حضورها ونطاق تأثيرها داخل قاعدة ماغا واليمين الأمريكي الأوسع.

الفاعلون الرئيسيون في التحول داخل ماغا

يتصدر المشهد في هذا التحول عدد من الشخصيات الإعلامية والسياسية التي تحظى بمتابعة واسعة في أوساط ماغا. قد يكون أبرزهم الإعلامي المحافظ تاكر كارلسون، الذي كان لسنوات نجم شبكة «فوكس نيوز» الأول، ثم غادرها في أبريل 2023 في سياق تراكم توترات داخلية مع الإدارة، كان من أبرزها خلافه المتصاعد مع خط الشبكة المتوافق مع الموقف الجمهوري التقليدي الداعم لأوكرانيا. فقد تبنى كارلسون موقفاً نقدياً حاداً من الانخراط الأمريكي في الحرب، وهاجم باستمرار المساعدات العسكرية لكييف، ما وضعه في مواجهة غير مباشرة مع توجهات الإدارة التحريرية لفوكس ومع تيار مؤثر داخل الحزب الجمهوري. ومع اقتراب تسوية قضية «دومينيون» وما رافقها من ضغوط تنظيمية على الشبكة، اعتُبر كارلسون عبئاً يصعب ضبطه، فكان القرار بإنهاء التعاقد معه. وبعدها أطلق شبكته الخاصة المسماة بـ Tucker Carlson Network، واعتمد على منصة «إكس» في نشر وترويج برنامجه الرئيسي الذي واصل من خلاله تقديم محتوى معادٍ للتدخل الأمريكي في أوكرانيا وبدء يتطرق من خلاله لما يحصل في فلسطين، بالإضافة الى مقارباته المحافظة للقضايا الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والثقافية المحلية.^[13]

مع أن كارلسون معروف منذ أعوام بنزعته النقدية تجاه الحروب الخارجية، لكنه بعد حرب غزة أصبح أكثر راديكالية في نقد الدعم اللامشروط لإسرائيل، وبدأ يستضيف ضيوفاً من فلسطين، من بينهم القس الفلسطيني منذر إسحق من بيت لحم، الذي استضافه كارلسون على برنامجه في ابريل/نيسان ٢٠٢٤. وصف إسحاق الحرب على غزة بأنها «إبادة» ضد المدنيين ودعا المسيحيين إلى إعادة النظر في علاقتهم بإسرائيل والصهيونية.^[14] هذه المقابلة وحدها حصدت ملايين المشاهدات وعشرات آلاف التعليقات، وأثارت غضباً عارماً في أوساط مؤيدي إسرائيل، بما في ذلك نواب جمهوريون اتهموا كارلسون بترويج «دعاية معادية لإسرائيل». ^[15]

شخصية أخرى مثيرة للجدل في هذا السياق هي كانديس أوينز، المعلقة اليمينية الشابة التي برزت في أوساط ماغا في السنوات الأخيرة، وكانت حتى 2024 أحد الوجوه الرئيسة لموقع «ديلي واير» الذي يملكه المعلق اليهودي المحافظ – والصهيوني المتطرف -- بن شابيرو.^[16] بعد 7 أكتوبر، بدأت أوينز تستخدم منصاتها للهجوم على إسرائيل بشدة، مركزة على صور الدمار في غزة، ومستخدمة لغة حادة تتهم الحكومة الإسرائيلية بارتكاب «إبادة جماعية». نشب خلاف علني بينها وبين شابيرو عبر منصات التواصل؛ إذ اتهمها الأخير بالتقليل من شأن معاداة السامية والترويج لنظريات مؤامرة، بينما ردّت عليه باتهامات مضادة تتعلق بالولاء المفرط لإسرائيل وعدم الاهتمام بمعاناة الفلسطينيين. في مارس 2024، أعلنت منصة «ديلي واير» إنهاء العلاقة مع أوينز، واعتبرتها منظمة مراقبة معاداة السامية «Stop Antisemitism» لاحقاً «مُعادِية للسامية للعام».

المفارقة أن هذا الإبعاد لم يُنهِ تأثير أوينز، بل دفعها إلى إنشاء منصة مستقلة وبرنامج خاص بها يحصد ملايين المشاهدات شهرياً، ما يتيح لها الحديث بحرية أكبر عن اللوبي الصهيوني، وعن جرائم إسرائيل في غزة وعن ضرورة وقف المساعدات العسكرية لاسرائيل.^[17] هنا يبرز جانب مهم: خروج بعض الأصوات اليمينية المؤثرة من مؤسسات إعلامية مرتبطة بممولين محافظين تقليديين، بات يمنحها استقلالية مالية وسياسية تسمح بتبني مواقف أكثر تحدياً للخط المؤيد لإسرائيل دون الخوف من العقاب المؤسسي. وبهذا أصبحت منصات الإعلام البديل فضاءً موازياً يمنح الإعلاميين والمؤثرين، الذين يتعرضون للعقاب المؤسسي أو فسخ العقود بسبب مواقف تخالف الخطوط السائدة في المؤسسات التقليدية، مساحة آمنة للتعبير واستعادة جمهورهم، بل وتحقيق مستويات من المتابعة والتأثير تفوق أحياناً ما كانوا يحظون به داخل المؤسسات التقليدية نفسها.

ضمن هذا المشهد أيضاً، يبرز ستيف بانون بوصفه أحد أهم منظري ماغا ممن تجسّد فيهم هذا التحول المركّب. فبانون الذي قدّم نفسه في 2017 أمام منظمة «Zionist Organization of America» باعتباره «مسيحياً صهيونياً فخوراً» ودافع بقوة عن سجل ترامب المؤيد لإسرائيل، عاد بعد حرب غزة وحرب الأيام الاثني عشر مع إيران ليقدّم خطاباً مختلفاً بحدة؛ إذ أعلن في مقابلات وتصريحات متكررة أن إسرائيل «ليست حليفاً» بالمعنى التقليدي، بل أقرب إلى «محمية» تعتمد على الولايات المتحدة^[18]، وأن «الحرب انتهت» ولن يكون هناك مزيد من الانخراط العسكري الأميركي، داعياً إلى وقف أي مسار نحو تغيير الأنظمة في المنطقة ومطالباً إسرائيل بأن تكون «إسرائيل أولاً» كما يجب أن تكون الولايات المتحدة «أمريكا أولاً».^[19] هذا التحول لا يعني أن بانون أصبح أقل تطرفاً اجتماعياً أو أكثر ليبرالية؛ فهو ما زال متشدداً في قضايا الهجرة والثقافة، لكنه يعكس إدراكاً عميقاً لتحول مزاج قاعدة ماغا حول الحروب والتحالفات، ومحاولة لإعادة ترجمة هذا المزاج في لغة «أمريكا أولاً» الجديدة. وفي برنامجه «War Room» يفتح بانون مساحة متزايدة أمام أصوات من تيار «الواقعية والضبط» مثل كيرت ميلز، المدير التنفيذي لمجلة «The American Conservative»، وهي مجلة يمينية محافظة تبنت منذ سنوات نقداً صريحاً لمغامرات ما بعد 11 سبتمبر، ونشرت في الآونة الأخيرة مقالات وتحليلات تدين الحرب على غزة وتناقش اتهامات الإبادة وتدعو إلى استخدام النفوذ الأميركي للضغط على إسرائيل ووقف المساعدات العسكرية.^[20]

إلى جانب هذا المحور الفكري والإعلامي، تظهر شخصيات سياسية وإعلامية أخرى داخل الفضاء الماغاوي تساعد في توسيع دائرة النقد المحافظ لإسرائيل، مثل النائب الجمهوري السابق مات غيتز الذي يجمع بين صورة «المتمرّد» داخل الكتلة الجمهورية ومواقفه المتشددة ضد التورط في حروب الخارج والصفقات الدفاعية العملاقة،^[21] والكوميدي والناشط الليبرتاري ديف سميث الذي بنى جمهوره عبر بودكاستات وبرامج تنتقد التدخلات العسكرية الأميركية من منظور مبدئي رافض للمساعدات الخارجية، بما في ذلك لإسرائيل،^[22] وأخيراً ميغن كيلي، الإعلامية المحافظة ونجمة فوكس السابقة التي تحولت منصتها الرقمية إلى ساحة سجال مع مؤيدين بارزين لإسرائيل داخل اليمين، بما فيهم بن شابيرو وغيره حول حدود «حرية التعبير» عندما يتعلق الأمر بنقد إسرائيل.^[23] تشكل هذه الأسماء مجتمعة شبكة متداخلة من الأصوات الفكرية والإعلامية والسياسية التي تعد من رموز الحركة المحافظة في الولايات المتحدة، وباتت تطرح أسئلة غير مسبوقة داخل المعسكر ذاته عن معنى التحالف مع إسرائيل وحدوده وكلفته على مشروع «أمريكا أولاً».

على المستوى السياسي المباشر، بدأ عدد محدود من أعضاء الكونغرس الجمهوريين، خصوصاً من الجناح الأكثر تشدداً في مجلس النواب، بالتصويت ضد بعض مشاريع القوانين التي تفرض مساعدات جديدة لإسرائيل أو تساوي بين معاداة الصهيونية ومعاداة السامية. هذه الأصوات، مثل مارجري تايلور غرين وتوماس ماسي، ما زالت صغيرة نسبياً، لكنها تعبّر عن حالة جديدة؛ إذ لم يكن مألوفاً خلال عقود أن يصوت نواب جمهوريون ضد حزم مساعدات لإسرائيل بدوافع تتعلق بـ «أمريكا أولاً» أو الاعتراض على «التضييق على حرية التعبير» في الجامعات، مع بقاءهم في الوقت ذاته على يمين الحزب في ملفات أخرى مثل الهجرة أو حقوق الأقليات. بدورها، أعلنت مارجوري تايلور غرين أنها ستستقيل من الكونغرس ابتداءً من 5 كانون الثاني/يناير 2026، بعد قطيعة علنية مع دونالد ترامب قادته إلى سحب دعمه ووصفها بـ«الخائنة» و«المختلة» على خلفية خلافات حول ملفات إبستين، والسياسة الخارجية، وقضايا داخلية أخرى.^[24]

وأشارت غرين في بيانها المصوَّر إلى أنها لا تريد لولايتها أن تخوض «انتخابات تمهيدية مؤذية وكريهة» ضد مرشح مدعوم من ترامب، وأنها تشعر بأن الكونغرس جرى «تهميشه» وأن قيادة الحزب الجمهوري تخلّت عن أولويات «أمريكا أولاً» التي انتُخبت على أساسها.

إلى جانب هذه الأسماء، توجد تيارات أكثر تطرفاً في الهوامش، مثل «الغرويبرز» وبعض القوميين البيض، الذين يجاهرون بعداء صريح لليهود ويقدّمون معارضتهم لإسرائيل على أنها جزء من مشروع «استعادة أمريكا البيضاء».^[25] هذا التيار يجذب جزءاً من الشباب الساخط، لكنه يظل مرفوضاً في الخطاب الرسمي لماغا، وإن كانت الحدود بينه وبين التيار الشعبوي الأوسع تصبح أحياناً ملتبسة في فضاءات الإنترنت، حيث تختلط الشعارات القومية بمواقف عنصرية فجة أو معادية للسامية.

العوامل البنيوية المفسّرة للتحول

يمكن فهم التحول الجاري في موقف ماغا واليمين المحافظ من إسرائيل باعتباره نتاج تفاعل معقد لعدة مستويات من العوامل، لا مجرد استجابة ظرفية لحرب غزة وحدها، مع كون حرب الإبادة أسهمت في سرعة بروز التوترات الكامنة الى السطح. على المستوى الفكري والسياسي، برز في العقد الأخير تيار يميني «انعزالي» يرى أن الولايات المتحدة أُنهكت من «الحروب اللانهائية» في الشرق الأوسط وأفغانستان، وأن تحالفاتها العسكرية والمالية الواسعة تستنزف موارد كان يمكن أن تُوجَّه إلى الداخل. في هذا الإطار، تُدرَج إسرائيل أحياناً كجزء من شبكة تحالفات «العولمة الليبرالية» التي يرفضها تيار ماغا؛ إذ تُربط المساعدات العسكرية لإسرائيل بالمساعدات لأوكرانيا أو للناتو، ويتم تصويرها كحِمل على دافع الضرائب الأمريكي العادي.

في الآن ذاته، يواصل كثير من هؤلاء انتقاد تيار «المحافظين الجدد» الذي لعب دوراً محورياً في الدفع نحو غزو العراق وسياسات التدخل في المنطقة، ويرون أن اللوبيات المؤيدة لإسرائيل كانت جزءاً من تلك المنظومة التي جرّت البلاد إلى مغامرات خاسرة. هذا النقد لا يترجم دائماً إلى عداء لإسرائيل بذاتها، لكنه يفتح الباب لتساؤلات حول ما إذا كان التحالف الأمريكي الإسرائيلي مقدساً فعلاً أم مجرد سياسة يمكن مراجعتها مثل غيرها.

على المستوى الديموغرافي والجيلي، تتقاطع بيانات «غالوب» و«بروكينغز» و«جامعة ميريلاند» لتبين أن الأجيال الشابة، في الحزبين، أقل تعاطفاً مع إسرائيل من الأجيال الأكبر، وأكثر استعداداً للتعاطف مع الفلسطينيين أو تبني موقف «عدم الانحياز».^[26]هذا التوجه واضح على نحو خاص بين الشباب الإنجيليين: فبعد أن كان دعم إسرائيل بين هذه الفئة يقارب ثلاثة أرباع المستطلَعين عام 2018، هبط إلى نحو ثلث فقط في استطلاعات لاحقة، مع ارتفاع نسبي في تعاطف بعضهم مع الفلسطينيين وازدياد نسبة من يرفضون الانحياز لأي طرف.^[27] يتزامن هذا مع تراجع التدين المؤسسي عامة في المجتمع الأمريكي كما سبقت الإشارة، وهو ما يعني أن خزّان المؤيدين التقليديين لإسرائيل -الإنجيليون المحافظون- يتعرض لضغوط مزدوجة: تراجع نسبي في الوزن العددي، وتحوّل في مواقف الشريحة الشابة داخلهم.

إلى جانب ذلك، تلعب البنية الإعلامية الجديدة دوراً مركزياً. فالإعلام المحافظ لم يعد محصوراً في قنوات مثل «فوكس نيوز» أو صحف تقليدية، بل توسّع ليشمل شبكة واسعة من البودكاستات والقنوات الرقمية التي تدار بشكل مستقل، وتستمد تمويلها من الاشتراكات الفردية والدعاية المباشرة، لا من إعلانات شركات كبرى أو شبكات تلفزة لديها حسابات سياسية معقدة. هذا يمنح بعض مقدمي البرامج حرية أكبر في تحدي «الخط الرسمي» المؤيد لإسرائيل، كما رأينا مع كارلسون وأوينز وغيرهما. قدرة هذه المنصات على إنتاج مقاطع قصيرة قابلة للمشاركة السريعة تجعلها مؤثرة بشكل خاص في الأجيال الشابة التي لا تتابع الأخبار عبر التلفاز التقليدي.

العامل الأخلاقي-العاطفي لا يقل أهمية. فصور الدمار في غزة، وتقارير المنظمات الأممية والحقوقية عن الجوع والقصف المتكرر للمستشفيات والمدارس، خلقت صدمة وجدانية عالمية، لم تستثنِ الجمهور المحافظ بالكامل. استطلاع Responsible Statecraft الذي أُشير إليه سابقاً يكشف أن نسبة معتبرة من الأمريكيين -بمن فيهم بعض الجمهوريين الشباب- لا يستبعدون وصف ما يجري بأنه إبادة، وأنهم يرون ارتباطاً بين الدعم الأمريكي غير المشروط وبين استمرار المأساة.^[28] هذه اللغة لم تكن مألوفة في اليمين الأمريكي قبل سنوات قليلة، ما يعني أن حرب غزة سمحت باقتحام مفردات كانت محصورة في الأوساط اليسارية أو الحقوقية إلى قلب النقاش اليميني.

حجج وخطاب اليمين المعادي/الناقد لإسرائيل اليوم

يمكن تلخيص خطاب اليمين المعادي أو الناقد لإسرائيل داخل ماغا والتيارات القومية والليبرتارية في مجموعة من المقولات الأساسية أو الـ talking points التي تتكرر بصيغ مختلفة، وتتقاطع حول فكرة مركزية واحدة: أنّ الدعم غير المشروط لإسرائيل لم يعد من المسلّمات، بل يجب أن يُخضَع لمعيار «مصلحة أمريكا أولاً».

أولاً، هناك الحجّة القومية–الاقتصادية: يركّز هذا الخطاب على كلفة التحالف مع إسرائيل، فيطرح أسئلة مثل: «لماذا نمول حدود دولة أخرى بينما حدودنا الجنوبية مفتوحة؟» أو «لماذا تُرسل مليارات الدولارات إلى تل أبيب فيما البنية التحتية الأمريكية منهارة؟». هنا تُقدَّم المساعدات لإسرائيل كجزء من شبكة أوسع من الإنفاق الخارجي (أوكرانيا، الناتو، المساعدات الأجنبية) يجري تصويرها كعبء على دافع الضرائب الأمريكي، خصوصاً الطبقة العاملة البيضاء التي تراها ماغا قاعدتها الأساسية. ينطلق هذا التيار من شعار «أمريكا أولاً» ليقول إن أي دولار لا يعود بفائدة مباشرة على الداخل هو خيانة لهذا الشعار، وإسرائيل ليست استثناءً في ذلك^[29].

ثانياً، ثمة الحجّة المناهضة للحروب والانخراط الخارجي: هذا الخطاب يقدّم إسرائيل كإحدى البوابات التي جُرّت عبرها الولايات المتحدة إلى حروب الشرق الأوسط، من العراق إلى المواجهات مع إيران. أصحاب هذا المنطق يربطون بين نفوذ «المحافظين الجدد» ودور اللوبيات المؤيدة لإسرائيل في صناعة قرار الحرب، ويستخدمون تجربة العراق وأفغانستان دليلاً على أن التحالفات الأيديولوجية مع حلفاء في الشرق الأوسط تقود في النهاية إلى كوارث إنسانية ومالية وسياسية على الولايات المتحدة. هنا يتم تصوير استمرار الدعم العسكري والسياسي لإسرائيل – خصوصاً في ظل حرب غزة الأخيرة – كامتداد لـ«حروب لا نهائية» يرفضها التيار الشعبوي القومي^[30].

ثالثاً، هناك الحجّة الأخلاقية–الإنسانية، وهي جديدة نسبياً في اليمين لكنها تعزّزت مع صور الإبادة والدمار في غزة: بعض الأصوات اليمينية، خاصة بين الشباب والإنجيليين الصاعدين، باتت تتحدث بلغة حقوقية صريحة عن جرائم حرب، وحصار وتجويع، وقتل مدنيين، وتطرح سؤالاً أخلاقياً مباشراً: «كيف يمكن لبلد يقول إنه مسيحي أو محافظ أن يغضّ النظر عن هذا الحجم من المعاناة؟». هذا النوع من الخطاب لا يتبنى بالضرورة سرديات اليسار، لكنه يكسر التابو القديم القائل إن انتقاد إسرائيل أخلاقياً خط أحمر في اليمين^[31].

رابعاً، الحجّة المعادية للعولمة والنخبة: في هذه الرؤية تُدمج إسرائيل داخل منظومة أوسع تضم «وول ستريت»، و«وادي السيليكون»، والمؤسسات الأمنية، والإعلام الليبرالي، والاتحاد الأوروبي… إلخ. يُقدَّم اللوبي المؤيد لإسرائيل كجزء من شبكة نفوذ عالمية تتحكم بالأجندة الأمريكية وتمنع أي سياسة حقيقية «لصالح الشعب». هنا يصبح نقد إسرائيل أحياناً مجرّد بوابة لنقد أوسع للنخبة الحاكمة، وفي بعض الأحيان ينزلق هذا الخطاب إلى تلميحات أو مقولات معادية لليهود تتبنّى لغات المؤامرة التقليدية حول «المال والإعلام»، وإن حاول بعض رموز ماغا التمييز لفظياً بين «اليهود» و«اللوبي الإسرائيلي».^[32]

خامساً، هناك الحجّة الليبرتارية: هذه تنطلق من رفض عام لكل أشكال المساعدات الخارجية والتدخلات، وتضع إسرائيل في السلة نفسها مع أوكرانيا، ومصر، والأردن، ودول أخرى. هنا لا يجري استهداف إسرائيل لأسباب دينية أو عرقية، بل باعتبارها حالة نموذجية لدولة تعتمد على دعم دائم من الخزانة الأمريكية بما يخالف، في رأيهم، روح الدستور ومبدأ «الدولة المحدودة».^[33]

وأخيراً، هناك حجّة «كسر القداسة»: جزء من خطاب هذا اليمين لا يقول فقط «لا للمساعدات المالية والعسكرية»، بل يصر على أن إسرائيل يجب أن تُعامل كأي دولة أخرى: يمكن نقدها، التشكيك في نوايا حكوماتها، بل وحتى مساءلة شرعية تحالفها مع أمريكا، دون أن يُتَّهَم صاحب هذا النقد تلقائياً بمعاداة السامية أو بالخيانة. هذه النقطة بالذات هي التي تجعل هذا التيار مختلفاً عمّا سبق؛ إذ لم يعد ينطلق من فرضية أن «إسرائيل حليف مقدّس ثم نناقش التفاصيل»، بل يعكس ترتيباً جديداً: «نناقش أولاً المصلحة الأمريكية، ثم نقرّر كيف ننظر إلى إسرائيل».^[34]

بهذه المقولات يتبلور اليوم خطاب يميني معادٍ أو ناقد لإسرائيل، ينطلق من بوابات متباينة – أخلاقية، اقتصادية، مناهِضة للحرب، معادية للعولمة أو متأثرة بنزعات مؤامراتية – لكنه يتقاطع في نقطة أساسية: رفض استمرار «الاستثناء الإسرائيلي» داخل المخيال المحافظ الأمريكي، والمطالبة بإخضاع هذا الملف لمنطق الصراع الداخلي على معنى «أمريكا أولاً» وحدود التحالفات الخارجية.

تفاعلات اللوبيات المؤيدة لإسرائيل والمؤسسات المحافظة مع التحول

أمام هذه التحولات، لم تقف المنظومة المؤيدة لإسرائيل مكتوفة الأيدي. على العكس، تشير معطيات الإنفاق السياسي والانتخابي في السنوات الأخيرة إلى تصاعد كبير في نشاط منظمات مثل «إيباك» (AIPAC) وذراعها الانتخابي (United Democracy Project)، التي أنفقت عشرات ملايين الدولارات في الدورات الانتخابية الأخيرة لدعم مرشحين موالين لإسرائيل في الحزبين، ومهاجمة مرشحين انتقاديين، خصوصاً في الجناح التقدمي من الحزب الديمقراطي.^[35] في الجانب الجمهوري، يلعب «الائتلاف اليهودي الجمهوري» (RJC) دوراً رئيسياً في الربط بين مانحين يهود كبار والحزب الجمهوري، وتشير تقارير إلى إنفاقه ملايين الدولارات على الدعاية الانتخابية في ولايات متأرجحة، مع تركيز واضح على حماية المرشحين الموالين لإسرائيل.

على الضفة الإنجيلية، تواصل منظمات مثل CUFI تقديم نفسها كأكبر تنظيم صهيوني في الولايات المتحدة، مع أكثر من عشرة ملايين عضو ومؤتمر سنوي يجمع آلاف القساوسة والنشطاء للقاء أعضاء الكونغرس والضغط من أجل تشريعات داعمة لإسرائيل، بما في ذلك قوانين لتجريم أو تقييد حملات المقاطعة (BDS) وقرارات تساوي بين معاداة الصهيونية ومعاداة السامية. هذه المنظمات تنقل إلى جمهورها رواية تركز على أن المسيحية الحقيقية تقتضي الوقوف مع إسرائيل، وأن معارضة سياسات تل أبيب تكاد تكون مرادفة للعداء للدين نفسه، مع توظيف كثيف لنصوص دينية تَعِد بمباركة من «يباركون شعب الله».

أما المحور الثالث فيتمثل في الاستثمار في القيادات الشابة المحافظة التي تلتزم بالخط المؤيد لإسرائيل، سواء في الكونغرس أو في الإعلام أو في الجامعات، وتقديمها بوصفها «نموذجاً للمحافظ المعاصر» الذي يجمع بين الدفاع عن الهوية الأمريكية التقليدية وبين الولاء للتحالف مع إسرائيل. في الوقت ذاته، يدور نقاش داخل بعض هذه المؤسسات حول كيفية التعامل مع البيانات التي تظهر تراجعاً في دعم إسرائيل بين الشباب؛ فبعض الأصوات تنادي بإعادة النظر في اللغة المستخدمة لتكون أقل حدّة، أو بفتح هامش لسماع الانشغالات الأخلاقية للجمهور الشاب حول غزة، فيما يصر آخرون على أن أي تراجع الآن سيُقرأ باعتباره ضعفاً واستسلاماً أمام تيارات اليسار العالمي.

من جهة إسرائيل الرسمية، يواصل رئيس الوزراء بنيامين نتنياهو وحكومات اليمين المتعاقبة التركيز على تعميق العلاقات مع الحزب الجمهوري ومع المنظمات الإنجيلية، إلى درجة أن بعض الباحثين الإسرائيليين والأمريكيين حذروا من «تسييس» وشخصنة علاقة البلدين وتحويلها من علاقة ثنائية فوق حزبية إلى تحالف مع جناح واحد، ما يجعل دعم إسرائيل مرهوناً ببقاء هذا الجناح في السلطة. تصريحات نتنياهو في زياراته المتكررة لواشنطن، والتي يحذّر فيها من «حملة تشويه منسقة ضد إسرائيل على وسائل التواصل» ويحمّلها مسؤولية تراجع التعاطف الشعبي، تعكس إدراكاً متزايداً داخل إسرائيل بأن المعركة على الرأي العام الأمريكي، بما في ذلك داخل اليمين، لم تعد محسومة كما كانت في الماضي.^[36]

ما تحدث عنه نتنياهو بشأن ضرورة مواجهة ما وصفه بـ«تشويه صورة إسرائيل» على الإنترنت انعكس عملياً في تحرّكات حلفائه داخل الولايات المتحدة، الذين سارعوا إلى محاولة استعادة النفوذ عبر جهود مزجت بين الاستحواذ على المؤسسات الإعلامية وشركات تكنولوجيا المعلومات بهدف التحكم في السردية وإعادة ضبط الخطاب بما يصب في مصلحة إسرائيل وحلفائها. في هذا السياق جاء تعيين الناشطة باري وايس في شبكة CBS News مثالاً بارزاً على هذا التوجه؛ فوايس، المعروفة بتوجهاتها الصريحة في دعم إسرائيل ومهاجمة الأصوات المنتقدة لها، جرى استقدامها إلى موقع مؤثر داخل إحدى أكبر الشبكات الإخبارية الأمريكية في خطوة تُقرأ على أنها محاولة لإعادة ضبط الخط التحريري في مرحلة يتراجع فيها التأييد لإسرائيل بين فئات واسعة، بما في ذلك داخل القاعدة اليمينية الشابة.^[37]

جاء تعيين وايس في هذا المنصب الحساس ضمن تغييرات بنيوية أوسع، كان اكبر الأمثلة عليها صفقة استحواذ شركة MediaSkydance بقيادة ديفيد إليسون على شبكة Paramount — الشركة الأم لـ CBS — دوراً مركزياً في إعادة تشكيل ملكية إحدى أهم المؤسسات الإعلامية، بدعم وتأثير من والد ديفيد المليايردير لاري إليسون المؤيد لإسرائيل. بالتزامن، برزت معارك تنظيمية واقتصادية حول منصات مثل TikTok، ما يشير إلى أن التنافس على النفوذ الإعلامي والمعلوماتي بات جزءاً من الصراع الأوسع على كيفية تشكيل الرأي العام الأمريكي تجاه إسرائيل. من خلال هذا الخليط من التعيينات الإعلامية والصفقات التقنية والاستثمارات المالية، تعيد الشبكات المؤيدة لإسرائيل بناء نفوذ قديم بصيغة جديدة قادرة على مواجهة التحولات الصاعدة داخل الولايات المتحدة، ومحاولة تثبيت خطاب داعم لإسرائيل في لحظة يبدو فيها المزاج الشعبي أقل انضباطاً وأكثر استعداداً لكسر التابوهات التقليدية.

ابستين، تشارلي كيرك، وفقدان السيطرة على السردية

رغم الجهود الحثيثة التي يبذلها مؤيدو إسرائيل لضبط السردية داخل الولايات المتحدة، تكشف طريقة تفاعل المجال العام الأمريكي مع قضيتي جيفري ابستين واغتيال تشارلي كيرك عن تحوّل بنيوي في ميزان القوة على إنتاج المعنى السياسي، سواء على مستوى المجتمع الأمريكي ككل أو داخل اليمين وحركة ماغا على وجه الخصوص. لسنوات طويلة، اعتُبرت المؤسسات الإعلامية الكبرى، إلى جانب اللوبيات المؤيدة لإسرائيل، قادرة على ضبط حدود النقاش حول القضايا الحساسة وتوجيه الرأي العام، إلا أن انفجار النقاشات حول ابستين ثم كيرك أظهر أن قدرة هذه المؤسسات على احتكار التأويل تراجعت بشكل واضح، وأن الفضاء الرقمي والتيارات الشعبوية باتت قادرة على إنتاج سرديات موازية لا يمكن احتواؤها بسهولة.

في حالة ابستين، بدأت القصة في الوعي العام كقضية استغلال جنسي لقاصرات وشبكات نخبوية من رجال المال والسياسة، لكنها سرعان ما تحولت في الخطاب الشعبي – خاصة في أوساط اليمين الرقمي – إلى عنوان أوسع يتجاوز الانتهاكات الفردية إلى الحديث عن الابتزاز السياسي والعمل الاستخباري العابر للحدود، واستخدام الجنس وسيلة لتوريط شخصيات نافذة. بعض الصحفيين والكتاب، ومن بينهم ماكس بلومنثال وآخرون، قدّموا قراءة تقول إن قضية ابستين أصبحت في نظر جزء من الجمهور الأمريكي مجازاً يختزل إحساساً بوجود شبكة نفوذ فوق-مؤسساتية مرتبطة باللوبي المؤيد لإسرائيل وبعلاقات معقدة مع أجهزة استخباراتية أجنبية. لقد تحول «ابستين» في المخيلة السياسية الشعبية، وخصوصاً في الهامش اليميني الشعبوي، إلى ساحة رمزية يُساءَل فيها النفوذ الإسرائيلي وتأثيره على النخب الأمريكية. إصرار قطاعات من قاعدة ماغا على إبقاء الملف مفتوحاً، والمطالبة بالكشف عن الوثائق والأسماء، جعل من القضية نقطة احتكاك متكررة بين سردية رسمية تسعى إلى غلق الملف، وسردية شعبوية ترى فيه مثالاً على تغوّل شبكات النفوذ المرتبطة بالعولمة واللوبيات المؤيدة لإسرائيل.^[38]

أما في حالة تشارلي كيرك، مؤسس منظمة Turning Point USA وأحد أبرز وجوه اليمين المحافظ الشاب، فقد جاء اغتياله الصادم خلال فعالية طلابية عام 2025 ليشكّل لحظة انفجار سردي من نوع مختلف. فبينما سارع سياسيون وإعلاميون كُثُر إلى إدانة الاغتيال بوصفه تعبيراً عن تصاعد العنف السياسي في الولايات المتحدة، انطلقت في فضاءات ماغا وعلى منصات التواصل موجة من التأويلات والاتهامات المتبادلة. حاولت إسرائيل وبعض حلفائها توظيف حادثة اغتيال كيرك في إطار الصراع مع «اليسار الراديكالي» أو «الحركات المؤيدة للفلسطينيين». فقد سارع بنيامين نتنياهو إلى نشر بيانات وتسجيلات على منصة «إكس» يصف فيها كيرك بأنه «صديق شجاع القلب لإسرائيل» ومدافع عن «الحضارة اليهودية-المسيحية»، وأنه اغتيل لأنه «قال الحقيقة ودافع عن الحرية»، مقدِّماً إياه كرمز لسردية إسرائيلية-يمينية أميركية مشتركة، رغم أن تسريبات لاحقة أشارت إلى تحفظ كيرك المتزايد على سياسات حكومة نتنياهو والحرب على غزة، وإدراكه أن القاعدة الشبابية المحافظة التي كان مسؤولاً عن تنظيم قطاعات واسعة منها بدأت تتململ حيال مسألة دعم إسرائيل. في المقابل، ظهرت سريعاً سردية مضادة داخل جزء من اليمين نفسه، تجسدت خصوصاً في هجوم تاكر كارلسون الذي وصف رد فعل نتنياهو بأنه «مقزز» ومحاولة «لخطف ذكرى تشارلي» وتطويعها لخدمة أجندة إسرائيل، بالتوازي مع انفجار نظريات مؤامرة على اليمين تتهم إسرائيل أو حلفاءها في الولايات المتحدة بالضغط على كيرك في شهوره الأخيرة وتقرأ طريقة نعيه بوصفها جزءاً من معركة أوسع على الرأي العام اليميني. هذه السرديات ساهمت في تحويل مقتل كيرك إلى نقطة نقاش عن حدود نفوذ الممولين المؤيدين لإسرائيل داخل اليمين، وعن الثمن الذي يدفعه من يحاول فتح نقاش أكثر تحرراً حول إسرائيل داخل بنية محافظة تقليدياً.^[39]

هاتان الحالتان مجتمعتان تبرزان كيف أن المؤسسات المؤيدة لإسرائيل – من لوبيات ومؤسسات إعلامية وممولين كبار – لم تعد قادرة على افتراض أن سرديتها ستكون تلقائياً السردية الوحيدة أو المهيمنة داخل المعسكر الجمهوري واليميني. فهناك اليوم، داخل ذلك المعسكر نفسه، تيارات وقواعد شبابية ومنصات إعلام بديل تنتج قراءات مختلفة، أحياناً متطرفة أو مؤامراتية، لكنها تعبّر في جوهرها عن فقدان الثقة في الرواية الرسمية، واستعداد متزايد لتحدي «المحرّمات» التي كانت تحيط بملف إسرائيل، سواء في قضايا الفساد والابتزاز كما في أبستين، أو في قضايا النفوذ والضغط كما في النقاشات التي رافقت اغتيال تشارلي كيرك.

الحملة المضادة داخل الحزب الجمهوري: ضبط الصدع باسم «محاربة معاداة السامية»

أمام التغيّر المتدرّج في مزاج القاعدة اليمينية، خاصة بعد حرب غزة، لم تكتفِ القيادة التقليدية للحزب الجمهوري ومؤسسات اللوبي المؤيد لإسرائيل بمتابعة المشهد من بعيد، بل أطلقت ما يمكن وصفه بحملة مضادة تهدف إلى إعادة ضبط حدود النقاش داخل الحزب وخارجه. هذه الحملة تُقدَّم في الخطاب العام بوصفها دفاعاً عن «حرية اليهود في عدم التعرّض للكراهية» ومحاربة معاداة السامية وحماية النظام الجامعي من «الفوضى»، لكنها تعمل عملياً كآلية قمع ناعمة لاحتواء التحولات داخل القاعدة، ولردع كل من يجرؤ من اليمين على الاقتراب من نقد إسرائيل أو مساءلة حجم النفوذ الذي تتمتع به في السياسة الأمريكية.^[40]

يتجلّى هذا أولاً في المسار التشريعي والرمزي داخل الكونغرس؛ حيث دعم عدد من أبرز قادة الجمهوريين – بتحالف مع جناح «الصقور» الديمقراطي – قرارات وتصريحات تربط صراحة بين معاداة الصهيونية ومعاداة السامية، وتدين حركات المقاطعة وسحب الاستثمارات (BDS)، وتطالب الجامعات بضبط، إن لم يكن قمع، الأصوات الطلابية التي ترفع شعارات مؤيدة لفلسطين. هذه الخطوات تُقدَّم للجمهور كجزء من «معركة قيم» ضد الكراهية والعنف، لكنها تُستخدم في الممارسة العملية ترسانة سياسية وأخلاقية لإسكات النقد الجدي لإسرائيل، وتجعل أي نائب جمهوري يفكر في معارضة المساعدات أو التشكيك في الحرب على غزة عرضة لاتهامات جاهزة بأنه يوفّر غطاء لمعادي السامية أو لـ«مؤيدي الإرهاب».^[41]

ثانياً، تظهر هذه الحملة في طريقة التعامل مع الاحتجاجات الطلابية والفضاء الجامعي. فاليمين المؤسسي كثيراً ما يدافع عن «حرية التعبير» حين يتعلق الأمر بخطاب محافظ أو ديني مثير للجدل، لكنه يميل إلى تأييد إجراءات عقابية وقمعية عندما يتعلق الأمر باعتصامات أو تظاهرات مؤيدة لفلسطين. يتم تصوير هذه الاعتصامات بوصفها بؤراً لمعاداة السامية أو دعماً لحماس، وتُستخدم هذه الصورة لمطالبة إدارات الجامعات بطرد الطلبة أو معاقبتهم أو حرمانهم من فرص التوظيف مستقبلاً عبر «القوائم السوداء» التي ترعاها مؤسسات مرتبطة برجال أعمال مؤيدين لإسرائيل. هنا يصبح خطاب «محاربة معاداة السامية» أداة عمليّة لإعادة تعريف مُسبق لما هو مسموح وغير مسموح في النقاش حول إسرائيل داخل الجامعات، حتى قبل النظر في مضمون ما يقوله المحتجون.

ثالثاً، وربما الأهم من وجهة نظر تحولات ماغا نفسها، تتجلى الحملة المضادة في كيفية التعامل مع الأصوات الخارجة من داخل المعسكر اليميني ذاته. قصة مارجوري تايلور غرين مثال مهم على الصدع المتعمق داخل الحزب الجمهوري. فجرين، النائبة الجمهورية التي صعدت أصلاً كإحدى أكثر الأصوات ولاءً لترامب وماغا، وبنت صورتها على المزاوجة بين قومية متشددة وخطاب ديني محافظ، تحولت – مع حرب غزة وتفاقم ملف إبستين – إلى واحدة من أبرز وجوه التمرد على البيت الأبيض الجمهوري والقيادة الحزبية معاً. حين بدأت غرين تنتقد الانخراط الأمريكي في الحرب على غزة وتصف ما يجري بأنه «إبادة» وتطالب بإطلاق ملفات إبستين كاملة، وجدت نفسها في مواجهة مباشرة مع شبكة معقدة من المصالح: البيت الأبيض، قيادة الحزب في الكونغرس، ولوبيات قوية تتهم أي تشكيك في التحالف مع إسرائيل بأنه انحراف عن «أمريكا أولاً» لصالح «أجندة معادية للسامية» أو «أجندة يسارية متطرفة».^[42]

النتيجة كانت تصعيداً دراماتيكياً انتهى بإعلان غرين استقالتها من الكونغرس، وتحوّلها من «ابنة ماغا المدللة» إلى شخصية يصفها ترامب نفسه علناً بـ«الخائنة» و«المختلّة»، ويهدّد بدعم مرشح ضدها في الانتخابات التمهيدية. في بيان استقالتها وفيديوهاتها على منصة «إكس»، ربطت غرين بين خروجها من المؤسسة التشريعية وبين قناعتها بأن «أمريكا أولاً يعني أمريكا فقط، ولا يجب أن يُرفَق بأي بلد أجنبي في أروقة الحكم»، في إشارة واضحة إلى رفضها لتحويل إسرائيل إلى شريك دائم في تعريف المصلحة القومية الأمريكية. كما تحدثت عن تهديدات تلقتها بعد سقوط دعم ترامب، وعن شعورها بأن «مافيا سياسية» مرتبطة بالقيادة الجمهورية واللوبيات المؤيدة لإسرائيل تعمل على معاقبة كل من يرفض الانضواء في الخط الرسمي للحزب. تكشف قصة غرين كيف يمكن لمجرد الاقتراب من ملفات مثل غزة أو إبستين من زاوية ناقدة لدور إسرائيل أو حلفائها أن يحوّل نائباً جمهورياً من نجم صاعد إلى «منبوذ» خلال فترة قياسية قد لا تتجاوز أسابيع قليلة.^[43]

بهذا المعنى، لا يمكن فصل السجال حول «حرية التعبير» و«محاربة معاداة السامية» في الولايات المتحدة اليوم عن الصراع الأعمق الذي يدور داخل الحزب الجمهوري وبين جناحين في معسكر اليمين: جناح تقليدي–مؤسسي يرى أن التحالف مع إسرائيل جزء من هوية الحزب التي لا يجوز المساس بها، وجناح ماغاوي–شعبوي أكثر استعداداً لطرح أسئلة محرجة حول كلفة هذا التحالف ومكانته ضمن شعار «أمريكا أولاً». الحملة المضادة التي تقودها القيادة التقليدية، مستفيدة من شبكة اللوبيات والقوانين والاتهامات الأخلاقية، تهدف في الجوهر إلى منع هذا السجال من التحول إلى انقسام هيكلي يهدد بنية الحزب ويعيد تعريف علاقته بإسرائيل من الأساس. لكن إصرار شخصيات مثل غرين، وموجة الإعلام البديل التي تحتضن أصواتاً ناقدة للخط الرسمي، يعني أن هذه المعركة بعيدة عن الحسم، وأن السنوات القليلة المقبلة ستشهد المزيد من محاولات التأديب من الأعلى، والمزيد من التمردات من الأسفل، تحت شعارات متنافسة لحرية التعبير ومحاربة الكراهية والدفاع عن «أمريكا أولاً».

خاتمة: ملامح إعادة اصطفاف داخل اليمين وآفاق مستقبلية

ما يمكن استخلاصه من هذا العرض هو أن التحول الجاري داخل ماغا واليمين المحافظ في الموقف من إسرائيل ليس مجرد «انقلاب» مفاجئ، بل عملية تدريجية تتقاطع فيها عدة تيارات. على السطح، ما زال الحزب الجمهوري في مؤسساته القيادية متشبثاً بتحالف وثيق مع إسرائيل، ويواصل تأييد حزم المساعدات العسكرية والدبلوماسية الكبيرة، ويصطف معظم مرشحيه الرئاسيين مع خطاب الدعم غير المشروط. لكن تحت هذا السطح، تتبلور ثلاث طبقات من التغيير.

الطبقة الأولى هي التحول الجيلي: فالشباب الجمهوريون والإنجيليون أقل تمسكاً بالرواية التقليدية التي ترى في إسرائيل «حليفاً بلا عيب» وأكثر استعداداً للسؤال عن كلفة هذا التحالف على صورة الولايات المتحدة وسمعتها، وعن معاناة الفلسطينيين في غزة والضفة. الطبقة الثانية هي صعود خطاب يميني شعبوي-انعزالي يجمع بين الشك في التحالفات الخارجية، ورفض «المحافظين الجدد»، والعداء للمؤسسات الأمنية والدبلوماسية التقليدية «الدولة العميقة»، ويضع إسرائيل ضمن منظومة «العولمة» التي يريد التحرر منها. هذا الخطاب لا يعني تلقائياً التعاطف مع الفلسطينيين، لكنه يفتح باباً لرفض المساعدات المالية والعسكرية الامريكية لإسرائيل أو المطالبة بتقييدها وربطها بشروط أو حتى وضع علامات استفهام غير مسبوقة على جوهر التحالف بين البلدين.

الطبقة الثالثة هي التحول الإعلامي الذي سمح لفاعلين مثل تاكر كارلسون وكانديس أوينز وديف سميث وغيرهم بالحديث مباشرة إلى جمهور ماغا خارج قنوات الحزب التقليدية، وبصياغة سرديات جديدة عن فلسطين وإسرائيل تتراوح بين النقد الحقوقي والأخلاقي والانعزالية القومية وأحياناً نظريات المؤامرة. ومع أن اللوبيات والجماعات المؤيدة لإسرائيل ما زالت قوية وقادرة على معاقبة بعض الأصوات الناقدة أو تحجيمها، فإن قدرتها على ضبط كامل المشهد الإعلامي تراجعت بشدة مقارنة بما كان عليه الوضع قبل سنوات.

لا يعني كل ما سبق أن اليمين الأمريكي في طريقه للتحول إلى معسكر مؤيد لفلسطين بين ليلة وضحاها. فالواقع أكثر تعقيداً: اذ ان ثمة غالبية يمينية ما زالت ترى في إسرائيل حليفاً استراتيجياً وأخلاقياً، وهناك أقلية صاخبة، لكنها تتوسع بين جيل الشباب، تشكك في هذا التحالف أو ترفض كلفته. في المقابل، تشهد الساحة الديمقراطية تسارعاً في الاتجاه المعاكس، حيث باتت شرائح واسعة من القاعدة التقدمية ترى الدعم لإسرائيل إشكالياً على المستويين الأخلاقي والسياسي، الأمر الذي يفتح المجال لاحتمال نشوء تقاطع عابر للمعسكرات بين يسار ينتقد إسرائيل بدافع حقوقي، ويمين انعزالي يعارض المساعدات الخارجية بدوافع قومية واقتصادية، وفي بعض الحالات يلتقي الطرفان أيضاً عند نقد يستند إلى اعتبارات أخلاقية مشتركة.

من المنظور الفلسطيني، يقدم هذا المشهد المتحرك فرصاً وتحديات. الفرصة تكمن في أن الموضوع لم يعد مغلقاً ومحسوماً داخل اليمين كما كان، وأن هناك جمهوراً محافظاً شاباً مستعداً على الأقل لسماع رواية بديلة عن غزة والاحتلال. أما التحدي فيكمن في أن جزءاً من النقد اليميني لإسرائيل تحركه دوافع عنصرية أو نظريات مؤامرة، والاصطفاف مع هذا النوع من الخطاب قد يكون قصير المدى وخطراً أخلاقياً وسياسياً في آن.

على مدار عقود، سعى الفلسطينيون وحلفاؤهم في الولايات المتحدة إلى بناء حركة داعمة لفلسطين داخل ما اعتبروه الإطار الطبيعي والرافعة المنطقية لنضالهم، أي في الأوساط التقدمية واليسارية والليبرالية. لم يفكر كثيرون بجدية في احتمال تغيّر مواقف اليمين، وبخاصة اليمين الإنجيلي المسيحي الصهيوني، أو قابليته لإعادة النظر في موقعه من القضية الفلسطينية، لذلك ترسّخت البنية التحتية للتنظيم السياسي والعمل الخطابي المؤيد لفلسطين داخل فضاءات اليسار والتقدمية؛ حيث يتقاطع الخطاب الفلسطيني هناك مع قضايا العدالة العرقية والاجتماعية، وحقوق السكان الأصليين، والنضال ضد الإمبريالية والعنصرية البنيوية في الولايات المتحدة. اليوم، مع بروز تيار مناهض لإسرائيل داخل اليمين يحمل، ولو جزئياً، عناصر تعاطف مع الفلسطينيين ويعترف بإنسانيتهم ويرفض الإبادة الجماعية، يصبح المشهد أكثر تعقيداً، كما تصبح مهمة الفاعلين في مجالات المناصرة والتعبئة وبناء التحالفات من أجل فلسطين أكثر تشابكاً من السابق.

فمن جهة، تبرز أسئلة مبدئية تتعلق بكيفية نظر الفلسطينيين إلى أنفسهم وقضيتهم وتحليلهم للصراع مع إسرائيل بوصفه مشروعاً استعمارياً عنصرياً متشابكاً تاريخياً مع المنظومة الإمبريالية الغربية. ومن جهة أخرى، تفرض نفسها اعتبارات براغماتية تتعلق بمدى وجوب الانفتاح على أي حليف محتمل يمكن أن يساهم في محاصرة إسرائيل وتفكيك أسس تحالفها العميق مع الولايات المتحدة، سواء على المستوى السياسي أو العسكري أو الثقافي أو الدعائي. في هذا الإطار، سيكون من المهم متابعة كيفية تطور التيار المناهض لإسرائيل داخل ماغا واليمين الأوسع، وما إذا كان سيتجه فعلاً إلى توسيع قاعدته الشعبية والمنافسة على إيصال رموزه إلى مواقع صنع القرار بخطاب انتخابي صريح يرفض التحالف التقليدي مع إسرائيل ولا يتحرج من الدعوة إلى إنهاء أشكال الدعم السياسي والعسكري والمالي للمشروع الصهيوني.

ومن غير المستبعد أن تشكل الانتخابات الرئاسية عام 2028 ساحة اختبار حقيقية لهذه التحولات داخل الحزب الجمهوري، إذا ما برزت قيادات ذات حضور جماهيري مثل مارجوري تايلور غرين أو تاكر كارلسون أو توماس ماسي إما كمرشحين ينافسون رموز الحزب التقليديين، أو كلاعبين رئيسيين في صياغة أجندة انتخابية جديدة تستند إلى قاعدة شبابية داخل الحزب لم تعد تشارك الجيل الأقدم نظرته إلى إسرائيل بوصفها موضوعاً محصناً ضد النقد. عندها قد تتحول تلك الانتخابات إلى ما يشبه مواجهة داخلية حادة حول هوية الحزب وبرنامجه في قضايا السياسة الخارجية، في ظل الضغوط والتحديات التي تواجه إدارة ترامب الحالية، وما تولّده من تصدعات عميقة داخل اليمين الأمريكي نفسه.

في الوقت نفسه، سيبقى بناء تحالفات مع قوى من هذا النوع داخل اليمين الأميركي مهمة شديدة الصعوبة؛ فحتى لو تبنّت قطاعات منه مواقف معادية لإسرائيل أو ناقدة لتحالفها مع واشنطن، فإن شرائح واسعة من هذا المعسكر ما زالت أسيرة الإسلاموفوبيا، وتنظر إلى العرب والمسلمين ضمن سردية أوسع معادية للأقليات، تدعو إلى الترحيل الواسع، وإغلاق الحدود، وإيقاف الهجرة، وطرد المهاجرين، وتتغذّى على خطابات عنصرية قد تصل أحياناً إلى مستوى التفوق الأبيض.

ومع ذلك، بدأت فئات محدودة داخل هذا اليمين تتراجع عن بعض أحكامها المسبقة تجاه العرب والمسلمين والفلسطينيين، وتقرّ بأنها تعرّضت لـ«غسيل دماغ» طويل عبر الإعلام الرسمي والتقليدي، وأن روايتها عن الصراع لم تكن مكتملة. غير أن كثيراً من هذه المراجعات لا يزال محمّلاً بتناقضات ومغالطات وعدم اتساق، لأن هذه التحولات ما زالت في بداياتها وتأتي في إطار أوسع من إعادة تعريف اليمين – أو أجزاء منه – لدوره وهويته وبرنامجه وأعدائه وحلفائه. لذلك يبقى التعامل مع هذه الظاهرة مجالاً يحتاج إلى حذر سياسي وأخلاقي كبير خلال السنوات القليلة المقبلة، بحيث لا تجد حركة الحقوق الفلسطينية نفسها متورطة في تحالفات أكثر التباساً وخطورة.^[44]

في كل الأحوال، يتطلب التعامل الجاد مع هذه التحولات فهماً دقيقاً لبنية اليمين الأمريكي، بعيداً عن الصور النمطية المبسطة، وإدراكاً بأن السياسة الأمريكية تجاه إسرائيل لن تتغير بين ليلة وضحاها، لكنها تتعرض اليوم لضغوط بنيوية قد تفتح المجال في السنوات المقبلة أمام نقاش أوسع حول طبيعة هذا التحالف وحدوده، حتى داخل المعسكر الذي كان يُعد تاريخياً القلعة الأكثر صلابة في دعمه لإسرائيل.

A “chance” discovery under occupation

In 1982, National Geographic reported the uncovering of a Canaanite settlement, fortress, and cemetery west of Deir el-Balah, in the middle of the Gaza Strip. The site, more than three thousand years old, was identified by Israeli archaeologist Trude Dothan.

The find began after Israel’s 1967 occupation. Dothan saw a coffin lid in a Jerusalem souvenir shop, traced it to Gaza’s sands, and after months of searching found its source on a farm in Deir el-Balah. Excavations followed. To conduct them, Dothan relied on Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, who provided logistical and security support to the archaeologists. The excavation paused in the late 1960s and early 1970s when Gaza waged an armed insurgency against the Israeli occupation. Archaeological excavations advanced later on under the protection of an occupying army.

What the excavations revealed

As Dothan’s team dug the cemetery over nearly a decade, the scale of the discovery exceeded expectations. They uncovered tombs, artifacts, and anthropoid clay coffins in several styles and forms. The Bronze Age material offers a vivid account of life along the Palestinian coast, including spiritual beliefs, burial practices, and even culinary habits.

Crucially, the site illuminates the complex ties between the Egyptian Empire and local Canaanites. The evidence suggests a blending of cultures and likely the presence of Egyptian officials or soldiers securing the ancient “Way of Horus,” the strategic coastal road of New Kingdom Egypt.

The team also unearthed a palace about 55 meters long with 15 rooms and thick outer walls, along with a clay seal bearing hieroglyphic inscriptions comparable to those at Tell el-Amarna, supporting a 14th-century BCE date. A fortress came to light as well. Dothan argued that its plan closely resembles fortresses carved on the walls of Karnak, especially those documenting Seti I’s campaign in Canaan. Semi-final conclusions tied the fortress to a period of strong Egypt–Canaan relations, with estimates placing it in the reign of Seti I, given as roughly 1318 to 1304 BCE.

Who lived in Deir el-Balah 3,300 years ago

A leading theory holds that the population was a mix of local Canaanites and Egyptians who coexisted along the Way of Horus, with garrisons and administrators maintaining imperial security while daily life unfolded around them. It was a frontier community shaped by empire and locality at once.

From layered history to biblical proof-text

Rather than present this layered, regional history on its own terms, Dothan and others focused on using Deir el-Balah to “prove” a biblical storyline. They argued that a fortress along the Way of Horus could explain why the Children of Israel avoided the coastal road and took a longer desert route to Canaan, aligning the archaeology with a specific reading of Exodus.

According to this view, the Israelites deliberately bypassed the coastal route to evade Egyptian garrisons. The obsession with proving Exodus reflects a commitment to a Zionist narrative that elevates Old Testament validation over the full archaeological record. It has overshadowed the broader historical significance of Deir el-Balah as a Canaanite–Egyptian crossroads.

Looted past, museum glass

The anthropoid coffins and other finds are now displayed at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The site in Deir el-Balah was emptied of what could be carried. The full fate of the site remains unclear and demands answers from Israeli archaeologists and the military who removed the material. Some artifacts have also been claimed or purchased by wealthy Americans. Provenance, inventories, and export trails should be transparent. These are basic standards of ethical archaeology and cultural heritage.

War and heritage at risk

As Israel’s genocidal war continues to ravage Gaza, the status of the site in Deir el-Balah is unknown. No one can say whether it survives, especially after Israel has destroyed more than 200 heritage sites across Gaza with no regard for their value. The pattern is clear: the past is extracted and re-narrated elsewhere, the present is bombed, and the future is placed out of reach.

A constructive demand: Cairo’s Grand Egyptian Museum

There is an opening for action. Egypt just opened the Grand Egyptian Museum and has begun demanding the return of stolen artifacts. As a Palestinian historian from Deir el-Balah, I want to see this energy extended to Gaza. The Egyptian government, in coordination with Palestinian authorities and archaeologists, should demand that Israel return the artifacts looted from Deir el-Balah.

As an interim step, Egypt could house the Deir el-Balah artifacts at the Grand Egyptian Museum under a joint Egyptian–Palestinian stewardship until Gaza has the capacity to conserve and display them. The exhibit should present Deir el-Balah as it truly was: a Canaanite–Egyptian frontier of exchange, administration, and daily life. It should not be used to prop up biblical narratives that archaeology cannot prove.

This is not only about objects. It is about honoring a real, complex past and the people to whom it belongs. Deir el-Balah’s story is part of a longer pattern in which archaeology under occupation extracts value from Palestinian land, relocates it behind museum glass, and interprets it through political needs rather than historical truth.

Gaza carries thousands of years of human experience, not only the last years of grief. Returning the looted past is part of insisting on life, dignity, and memory against erasure. History is not a trophy to be claimed and collected. It is a trust to be returned.

Gaza’s rebellion has been a rejection of a draconian and tyrannical vision for what life in the 21st century might look like. For that reason, Gaza has inspired millions around the world. It has offered meaning in an era that felt as “post-ideological”—a time when masses of people live and die as devoted consumers, glued to their phones, doom-scrolling while watching influencers perform basic human acts like traveling, eating well, buying homes, or starting families. Gaza gave meaning and purpose to many at a moment when meaning and purpose—spiritual, ideological, political, and cultural—were being deliberately erased and dismantled.

Gaza showed that the poorest, most isolated, and besieged people on earth could still live—and die—for a cause. It showed entire generations that subjugation can be refused, even when the cost is unimaginable, beyond what most people can fathom. But Gaza did more than inspire. It exposed the enemy. It revealed corrupt politicians, inept political parties and systems, and the fragility of the so-called international order. More importantly, it uncovered the conglomerates and billionaire alliances propping up oppressive states and regimes—those advancing a tyrannical program designed to strip away rights, dismantle societies, and reduce the rest of humanity to digital serfs living in fear and despair.

The billionaire class’s rush to defend Israel and Zionism during Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza—and its unchecked aggression across the region—laid bare their true intentions. It revealed them for what they are: cynical and aggressive, willing to pay lip service to certain social issues while resisting any meaningful change to the systems that uphold their power. At the same time, they are fully committed to dismantling any space, institution, or platform where criticism of Israel might take shape. Gaza exposed Israel’s central role in this broader project of tyranny, militarism, surveillance, and the erosion of civil society.

Gaza tore away the veil behind which these forces have operated incrementally and quietly for years. In doing so, it helped people become bolder, firmer, and more confident in their pursuit of political change—even in a moment of profound uncertainty. It is a terrifying time, one in which the very institutions and spaces where people are organizing for justice are themselves under threat of being dismantled.

In this context, Zohran Mamdani won—proving that it is possible to run and win an electoral campaign while openly embracing positions that, just a few years ago, could have ended a politician’s career in the West. Mamdani’s victory came at a moment when his opponents were more exposed than ever. Their unwavering support for Israel was no longer seen in isolation, but as part of a broader reactionary, exclusionary, and elitist agenda—one aligned with the billionaire class and its push for a tyrannical vision of the 21st century.

The battle isn’t over. In fact, it’s just beginning. The pro-Israel billionaire class will not accept Mamdani’s victory as a defeat—they will escalate their aggression. If, in response to student protests and encampments—basic expressions of political speech—they were willing to threaten and undermine revered academic institutions central to the West’s identity, imagine what they will do in response to Mamdani becoming mayor and pursuing policies that benefit the working class. Their playbook is clear: suppress dissent, punish political defiance, and protect the status quo at all costs.

The pro-Israel billionaire class will only intensify its efforts in the months and years to come. They will continue fueling the “Muslim Question” in the West (stay tuned for a full piece on this soon), pushing for the dismantling of democratic institutions, uprooting the foundations of civil society, and pouring resources into the 21st-century surveillance state—powered by Israeli technology and repression methods field-tested on Palestinians. The fight is not over. It is only just beginning.

In the meantime, Gaza—the place that set these unprecedented political shifts into motion—remains under constant threat of renewed genocidal violence. It lies in ruins. Its people remain displaced in tents, facing yet another brutal winter without proper shelter. Gaza must not be forgotten in moments like this. Victories anywhere, no matter how big or small, should be moments to remember Gaza—moments to recommit to Palestinian liberation, to ending the genocide, and to demanding accountability, rebuilding, and healing for our people there.

Question: Since President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu announced a ceasefire deal and 20-point plan for Gaza on September 29, Israel has continued to carry out attacks and maintained restrictions on food and other aid entering Gaza, violating its commitments under the deal. How would you describe the situation on the ground in Gaza today?

Jehad Abusalim: The situation on the ground in Gaza remains devastating. While a ceasefire was announced, there has been no meaningful improvement in the daily lives of Palestinians. Israel has continued to carry out attacks, killing over 200 people since the ceasefire supposedly took effect—including 104 in the past 24 hours alone, including 46 children. Aid remains severely restricted. Only limited supplies have entered, and much of the population is still without access to enough food, clean water, medicine, or proper shelter. Many victims remain trapped under the rubble, as no heavy equipment has been allowed in to aid rescue or reconstruction efforts.

The health sector has collapsed. Hospitals are barely functioning, doctors are overwhelmed, and patients are dying from treatable injuries and illnesses. Unexploded ordinances scattered across neighborhoods continue to pose a lethal threat to civilians.

While global attention has focused on the recovery of Israeli hostage remains, Palestinians in Gaza are still living through the core realities of genocide—ongoing blockade, displacement, destruction, and the constant threat of renewed bombardment. What we’re witnessing is not a transition to peace, but the continuation of violence in a slightly altered form/scale, with the ever-present risk of escalation back to mass killing, as we saw on Tuesday.

Q: The plan for ending Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza that was announced by Trump and Netanyahu was drafted primarily by Trump’s son-in-law and longtime close family friend of Netanyahu, Jared Kushner, with input from Netanyahu. It makes numerous demands of Palestinians, including disarming Hamas and major reforms to the West Bank-based, western-backed Palestinian Authority, while saying nothing about Israel’s military occupation or theft of Palestinian land in the West Bank or East Jerusalem or its relentless expansion of illegal settlements, which are a major obstacle to peace.

If Palestinians meet all the conditions imposed on them, the plan only offers a faint possibility of one day having a Swiss cheese Palestinian “state” devoid of any sovereignty, surrounded by Israeli settlements, walls, and military checkpoints, and only if Israel allows it. How would you characterize the plan?

JA: This plan was drafted without any input from Palestinians and continues a long-standing US pattern of sidelining them from decisions about their own future. It does not mark a rupture from past US policy but rather extends the same approach we saw under the first Trump administration and in many previous administrations. The core issue remains: Palestinians are treated not as a political people with national rights and aspirations, but as a problem to be managed.

The plan reflects a fundamental refusal to engage Palestinians as a political group with legitimate demands for freedom and self-determination. Even as unprecedented diplomatic steps have occurred—such as direct US contacts with Hamas—those interactions have focused on tactical concerns, not political substance.

By ignoring Israel’s illegal occupation, settlement expansion, and system of apartheid, and by proposing a fragmented, non-sovereign entity as the end goal, this plan reaffirms US bias and preference for managing conflict through economic and security arrangements. Like the failed frameworks before it, this plan will only reproduce the very conditions that fuel instability, bloodshed, and resistance in Palestine and the region.

Q: Trump appointed himself to head the so-called “Board of Peace” that will rule Gaza under the plan for the foreseeable future, with former British prime minister Tony Blair also on the board playing a key role. What do you think of Blair’s involvement, particularly given Britain’s history as a former colonial power in Palestine that was instrumental in the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948?

JA: For Palestinians, Blair’s involvement is a clear signal that the same failed logic of past interventions remains the same: avoid serious political solutions and instead manage the crisis in Israel’s favor. Blair carries with him the legacy of Britain’s colonial role in Palestine and his central role in the Iraq War—a war that devastated an entire country and destabilized the region for decades.

But beyond that, Blair’s tenure as the Quartet’s envoy to the Middle East from 2007 to 2015 offers important context regarding his potential role. Rather than pushing for a final status agreement or real political progress, Blair’s office focused on infrastructure projects and promoting the idea of “economic peace.” That shift—from diplomacy rooted in political rights and resolutions to a framework focused on economic management—mirrors the very core of the current plan and its direction.

Blair’s return in this new role is not incidental. His extensive regional business ties, political relationships, and post-premiership consulting ventures have positioned him as someone who facilitates elite-level deals, not justice. His appointment affirms that this so-called peace plan prioritizes commercial and strategic interests over Palestinian freedom and independence. It is a continuation of the status quo—colonial in spirit, managerial/business-oriented in structure, and fundamentally disconnected from the realities and aspirations of Palestinians.

Q: Governments in the region and around the world have welcomed the plan. Some of them are sincerely motivated by a desire to end the slaughter and others are complicit in Israel’s genocide and just want an end to the political headache it has caused them domestically given the outrage at Israel’s actions among their publics. What would you say to these governments and what would you like them to do to help move the region towards a true and lasting peace?

JA: The desire to end the bloodshed is necessary and urgent, but history has shown us that ceasefire agreements alone do not address the deeper causes of violence. As we’ve seen in Gaza—and before that in places like Lebanon—ceasefires may pause the killing temporarily, but they do not stop Israel’s continued push for regional dominance through force. Since October 7, 2023, that push has only intensified, with Israel escalating its entitlement to bomb neighboring countries and act with impunity across regional borders.

Governments that truly want to contribute to a just and lasting peace must move beyond rhetorical support and apply real pressure. This means enacting economic sanctions and an arms embargo on Israel. It means ending the flow of weapons and diplomatic cover that enable its aggression. It also requires supporting international efforts to hold Netanyahu - who is facing an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court - and other Israeli officials accountable for war crimes.

Most importantly, there must be a clear and collective stance from the international community to dismantle Israel’s settler-colonial and apartheid system. That system is the root cause of this violence. Any plan that leaves apartheid intact will not bring peace; it will entrench injustice and guarantee future cycles of bloodshed. Justice, accountability, and the end of apartheid must be non-negotiable, especially in light of the genocide Israel unleashed against Gaza, and in light of dangerous steps it is taking in the West Bank.

Q: Do you think this plan has any chance of success of either, a) The stated objective of its architects, bringing to peace the region, or b) Their unspoken objective, permanently subjugating Palestinians under Israel’s apartheid rule?

JA: True peace is only possible when the root causes of violence—occupation, displacement, apartheid, and settler-colonialism—are directly addressed. This plan, unfortunately, does not do that. While it may reduce the intensity of violence or create the appearance of stability in the short term, it does so by entrenching the status quo: placing Israel’s security and regional dominance at the center, while sidelining Palestinians politically and structurally.

The plan does not create a serious political horizon. It offers no meaningful path to Palestinian sovereignty, self-determination, or justice. Instead, it reinforces an approach rooted in economic incentives and security coordination, as though Palestinian demands for freedom and rights can be managed or bought off. Palestinians are treated not as partners in shaping their future, but as a population to be controlled.

So while the plan may not succeed in its stated objective of regional peace, it could very well advance its unstated one: the continued subjugation of Palestinians under a deepening apartheid regime. But history has shown that imposed arrangements built on exclusion and injustice are never sustainable. This plan, like those before it, risks fueling further resistance, instability, and regional fallout, rather than offering a viable path forward.

For two years, reporters, activists, citizen journalists, and writers in Gaza did everything they could, and more, to document what was happening.

And what did they get in return? They were cynically erased, dismissed, ignored, and ridiculed by their Western "colleagues." They were structurally deemed "untrustworthy." The footage they captured, the stories they told, the accounts they recorded were cast aside, doubted, or denied. Israel has killed more than 230 Palestinian journalists in Gaza. Each one, in life and in death, was mocked and belittled. “Everyone in Gaza is a journalist,” Zionists laughed, as they waged one of the most relentless dehumanization campaigns in modern history.

Israel murdered Anas Al Sharif and his colleagues because they were Gaza’s last remaining voices capable of covering what is happening. Israel murdered Anas and his colleagues because it does not want the world to witness the crimes it is about to commit in the coming weeks.

Israel assassinated Anas Al Sharif and his colleagues. This was a deliberate, targeted assassination carried out with the full knowledge and intention of its perpetrators. Israel killed Al Jazeera’s team on purpose to impose a blackout on Gaza City ahead of the upcoming massacre. Do not, in any shape or form, entertain claims like “we didn’t do it,” “we did it but it was a mistake,” “Hamas bombed them,” “they bombed themselves,” “we don't know who did it,” or any other such LIES. Israel assassinated Anas Al Sharif and his colleagues with premeditation and malice aforethought.

We will never forget, and we will never forgive. We are forever indebted to Anas Al Sharif, Ismail al-Ghoul, Hossam Shabat, Muhammad Qeriqaa, Nour Qandeel, Ahlam al-Talouli, and a long list of heroes who were killed for nothing more than telling the truth. They are our heroes because they are of us, because they told our stories, because they are our eternal voice, because they will forever be remembered as the voice of the oppressed, the people of conscience, and all who value the truth. They will live forever in honor and dignity.

Anas Al Sharif

(1996 - 2025)

This phase of Zionist tyranny is one in which the Zionist establishment has come to terms with a new reality: after going too far in Gaza, the prospects for regional integration and acceptance have all but collapsed. So, what comes next, or what is already now, is a shift—not toward diplomacy or damage control, but toward asserting Israel’s presence through unmasked violence, through spectacular brutality, and through the total disregard for people’s lives, sovereignty, and dignity.

This latest iteration of the Israeli project is not subtle. It’s not about quiet security arrangements or traditional normalization. It’s about declaring, loud and clear, that Israel reserves the right to bomb anyone, anywhere, at any time. And any attempt to question this entitlement will be answered with more violence. This is the next decade. Israel, backed by U.S. military funding and political cover, bombing its way into asserting itself as the region’s supreme bully and extortionist.

Wars will continue to be waged in the region, while globally, Zionist lawfare and propaganda (Hasbara) machines will continue their work—smearing, silencing, distorting. What we’re witnessing is an attempt to turn Israel into a mini-empire: a regime that continues to bomb Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, and Yemen simultaneously, while fighting its critics and challengers on every continent, in every courtroom, newsroom, and university.

But empires collapse under the weight of their own delusions. And this attempt to dominate the region and police the globe will lead to overreach, overextension, and eventually unraveling. The U.S. taxpayer will wake up—not just the disillusioned left, but segments of the right too. And the people of the region? They will not accept this reality.

Israeli racism continues to treat the people of this region as static, broken, and passive. But this region has shown, again and again, a capacity for resistance that is unmatched in the 21st century. This is not a region that forgets. It is not a region that submits.

A decade and a half ago, the people of the region rose up in the largest wave of uprisings demanding dignity, freedom, and social justice. As I argued in my essay for In These Times, the reaction to the Arab Uprisings was the regional adoption—and expansion—of the Israeli model: surveillance, militarization, fragmentation, and control.

People are not fools. A new generation of Arabs, many of whom were too young to participate in or even remember the 2011 uprisings, now understand Israel not only as an obstacle to Palestinian liberation, but as a central obstacle to the dignity and emancipation of the region as a whole.

In the face of Israeli and Zionist tyranny, the world will shift, and the region surrounding Palestine will not remain the same. The decade ahead will be bloody, punishing, and exhausting. It will demand everything from those who believe in justice and refuse to normalize genocide and Zionist tyranny. There is no room for passivity now, no space for the easily discouraged, no tolerance for the politically fatigued.

This is it. We are already living through the most consequential decade in the history of our region—and perhaps our world. And the only way forward is through.

Israeli politician Moshe Feiglin wrote this week on X: “Yes! Every baby in Gaza is an enemy. And if not expelled, in 15 years he’ll do the same October 7 to your baby.” He continued by saying that Gaza didn’t attack Israel as Hamas, but “as Gaza,” and therefore, all of Gaza — “to the last baby” — must be targeted. He compared Gaza’s population to Dresden and Hiroshima, declaring that all components of Gaza’s society are enemy combatants. He said the war should end in the complete conquest of the Strip and the removal of what he calls “Islamonazism” from Israel’s borders. He’s saying out loud what many in Israeli politics have long believed and built policy around.

Others are joining in with genocidal glee. Far-right politician and media figure Yinon Magal posted a video of a D9 bulldozer demolishing a Palestinian home in Gaza. He called the bulldozer operator the “Chief Rabbi of Gaza,” praising it as an “impressive morning performance.” This is the language of “spiritualized” extermination — destruction presented as divine duty mixed with humor and gloating. The grotesque imagery and violent humor are part of the same ideological framework that is actively working on wiping Gaza off the map and laugh while doing it.

And when Israeli opposition politician Yair Golan — a former general — pointed out the obvious by saying Israel is “killing babies as a hobby,” the backlash wasn’t about the content of the accusation. It was about who said it. He was accused of blood libel. He was labeled antisemitic. He was dragged by figures like Itamar Ben-Gvir. But no one really refuted what he said. They were angry because he exposed what has become undeniable.

Even Golan, though, is no hero. He’s the same person who said in October 2023: “Shut off any supply to Gaza… in this war a humanitarian effort should not be allowed… as far as we are concerned, you can starve to death.”

The mask is slipping. The language is becoming more direct, more open, more horrifying. But the project hasn’t changed. This has always been a settler-colonial regime that uses every tool — from starvation to high-tech weaponry — to erase Palestinians from their land. The difference now is that the regime and its backers no longer feel the need to disguise it or they just can’t hide it anymore.

Supporters of Israel in the West have played a central role in masking this reality. They’ve spent the last 18 months denying genocide, downplaying mass death, and reframing criticism of Israeli violence as antisemitism. And now, in the face of openly genocidal statements by Israeli leaders, they pivot to distraction or silence.

Take Howard Jacobson, who argued in an October 2024 interview with The New Yorker that “too much” press coverage of dead Palestinian children amounts to a modern form of blood libel against Jews. He said this despite overwhelming evidence that, by then, thousands of children in Gaza had already been killed, maimed, or injured. And today, there are still figures like him — and many worse — who continue to deny the genocide, even as the UN warns that 14,000 babies are at risk of dying within 48 hours. This denial was never about evidence. It’s always been about preserving impunity for the state of Israel.

No matter what Israeli officials and leaders say, the basic facts are clear. This is a campaign of annihilation. The statements are public. The maps are real. The destruction is visible from space. The starvation is documented. The mass graves are growing. And now the language has caught up with the reality: they are killing babies. They know it. They’re saying it. And they believe it’s justified.

There’s no rhetorical veil left. What remains is the question of what anyone plans to do to stop it.

The most recent Israeli assault on Gaza, launched under the name "Operation Gideon’s Chariots," once again reveals this pattern of religious militarization. In the Book of Judges, Gideon leads a divine massacre against the Midianites, slaughtering 120,000 with God’s blessing. Chariots, in biblical and ancient Near Eastern warfare, symbolize unstoppable force and divine favor. By invoking this story, Israel does more than give its assault a dramatic name: it casts itself as the righteous agent of God's will and Gaza as the wicked enemy deserving of annihilation.

The symbolic allusions go beyond just names. In Deir al-Balah, residents reported Israeli planes dropping leaflets that mimic the Quranic telling of Moses parting the Red Sea. The leaflet reads: "So We revealed to Moses: Strike the sea with your staff, and it parted, and each part was like a great towering mountain... Residents of Gaza, the Israeli army is coming." The accompanying image shows a wave splitting Gaza in two, its buildings submerged beneath divine waters, with the logos of the IDF and Israeli government affixed. This is not just psychological warfare; it is spiritual theatre. Israel presents its military as a prophetic force, Gaza as Pharaoh’s Egypt—doomed and drowning.

This practice is not new. A 2010 study by Dalia Gavriely-Nuri titled "Rainbow, Snow, and the Poplar's Song: The 'Annihilative Naming' of Israeli Military Practices" analyzes over 200 Israeli operation names and finds three recurring strategies: naturalization, euphemization, and legitimation. Names like Pillar of Cloud (2012) or Arrow of Bashan (2024) are biblical references that obfuscate the human cost of war while tapping into spiritual grandeur. Gavriely-Nuri argues these naming strategies help manufacture public consent by divorcing the operations from their material consequences—civilian death, mass displacement, starvation.

Consider the 2012 operation "Pillar of Cloud" (translated to "Pillar of Defense" for foreign audiences), which refers to Exodus 13:21: "And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them the way..." While the name was poetic in Hebrew, it was sanitized in English. The operation itself killed over 160 Palestinians in Gaza. Yet the name worked to obscure this violence under a divine metaphor.

Or take 2023's AI-targeting system named "Lavender," a reference to a biblical herb used in holy rituals. Despite its soft name, the system has been used to track and kill thousands of Palestinians, often with single-button approval based on vague metadata. Another AI system, "Gospel," implies divine sanction, righteousness, and moral clarity—even as its use reportedly involved dropping bombs on family homes to eliminate alleged militants. These names are designed not just to mystify, but to morally license violence.

Israel's "David's Sling" missile defense system is similarly framed. It invokes David's biblical defeat of Goliath, casting Israel as a perpetual underdog despite its overwhelming technological and military superiority. This narrative plays especially well in the U.S., where evangelical support for Israel is grounded in biblical prophecy and Christian Zionism. The symbolism resonates beyond borders—a call to the faithful, not just to the strategic.

Even older systems like "Jericho" missiles, named after the city allegedly destroyed by Israelite trumpets and divine will, follow this pattern. And then there's "Samson," Israel's remote-controlled gun turret system. In the biblical tale, Samson kills himself along with hundreds of Philistines in a final act of vengeance. The weaponized metaphor is chilling, especially in a context where Gaza is often framed as the modern Philistia.

The rhetoric also bleeds into political discourse. Prime Minister Netanyahu has repeatedly invoked Amalek —a biblical enemy God commanded the Israelites to annihilate entirely, including women and children. During the early stages of the war on Gaza, Netanyahu used this narrative to rally Israeli troops. This invocation was later submitted as evidence of genocidal incitement in South Africa’s ICJ case against Israel.

What all these examples show is that Israel’s war language is not just militarized; it is mythologized. The names of weapons, operations, and even surveillance systems are steeped in a theological lexicon that merges modern warfare with divine entitlement. Gaza is not just an enemy territory—it is a cursed land, its residents cast as ancient foes of Jewish destiny.

This ideological fusion has tangible consequences. It sanctifies indiscriminate violence. It frames war crimes as sacred duties. It neutralizes dissent by shrouding political critique in charges of heresy. And it appeals deeply to right-wing religious audiences both inside Israel and among its global allies.

There is also a practical function: psychological warfare. Leaflets evoking God, waves, and parting seas are meant to unnerve and humiliate. Names like Where’s Daddy?, reportedly used to track and target families, instill fear, especially during night raids when children are most vulnerable. According to reports, over half of Gaza’s war fatalities in the first month came from 1,340 families—many wiped out entirely while inside their homes.

Despite all this, major Western media outlets still resist calling out the religious zealotry embedded in Israeli conduct of war and politics. Figures like Bill Maher, who ridicule faith-based politics all over the world, continue to champion Israel as a secular, rational democracy. This contradiction is not just hypocritical; it is dangerous. It enables the very ideological extremism it claims to oppose.

Israel’s militarized theology is not limited to Gaza. In December 2024, Israel launched "Operation Arrow of Bashan" against Syria. Bashan, another biblical reference, was a land conquered by the Israelites after defeating King Og. Israeli strikes targeted Syrian ports, warships, and air defenses, destroying 80% of Syria’s military assets. Once again, the operation was framed as a holy conquest, a divinely ordained purification.

Whether in Gaza, Syria, or Lebanon, the pattern is clear: Israel casts itself as an eternal David, its enemies as new Philistines, Amalekites, Midianites, or Egyptians. This ancient worldview is then embedded into its software, its missiles, its battlefield propaganda. It is a war not just on people, but on meaning.

Naming a war "Gideon's Chariots" in 2025 isn't just tone-deaf; it's an act of ideological violence. It transforms genocide into divine spectacle. It weaponizes faith, history, and memory. And it does so with the complicity of an international audience that still refuses to read the symbols in plain sight.

This is not about belief. It is about the mobilization of belief for war. A faith-laced fantasy in which one state plays God, one people are cast as chosen, and everyone else is collateral. That is not security. That is sacrilege with state funding and satellite-guided missiles.

Gaza, 1956: A Geography of Displacement

In the wake of the 1948 Nakba, over 200,000 Palestinians—expelled from cities and villages often within walking distance of Gaza—found themselves trapped in a narrow coastal strip just 25 miles long. Many tried to return to their homes to harvest their crops or retrieve belongings, only to be met with Israeli gunfire or landmines. Israel labeled these acts of return as “infiltration.” The borders were drawn not by consensus, but by ceasefire lines that sealed Gaza off from the rest of historic Palestine. From 1948 to 1967, Gaza remained under Egyptian military and civilian administration—but Egypt never annexed the territory, and unlike Jordan in the West Bank, it did not erase Palestinian political identity.

The Photographer: David Douglas Duncan

Duncan’s career spanned several major wars and moments of political upheaval. A former Marine Corps combat photographer, he covered WWII in the Pacific, the Korean War (producing the seminal This Is War!) and later, the Vietnam War, where he turned against U.S. policy. He was the first American photographer allowed into Gaza by the Egyptians—a sign of both his reputation and the political weight of the story. His lens, sharpened by the intimacy of war and displacement, saw Gaza not as a curiosity, but as a human and political emergency.

Gaza, Before the Flood

Coverage on Gaza—then and now—has often lacked nuance, context, and the depth of Palestinian perspective. It’s typically either flattened into crisis headlines or framed through the distorted lens of strategic interest. Rarely is Gaza allowed to speak in its own voice, as a place shaped by history, dislocation, resistance, and humanity. But in 1956, David Douglas Duncan—an American photojournalist best known for his combat photography—did something rare: he entered Gaza not to exoticize it, but to witness it.

His photo essay, published in Collier’s just months before the Suez War and the Israeli-British-French invasion of Gaza and Sinai, is one of the most remarkable and overlooked visual records of Palestine’s midcentury condition. Duncan visited Gaza during a critical interwar period, at a time when the consequences of the 1948 Nakba were still fresh and unresolved. He understood immediately that Gaza was not simply a flashpoint—it was a product of arbitrary violence and abandonment, of borders drawn in war and closed in denial.

What makes this essay so important is that Duncan did not treat Gaza as an accident of geography or a footnote to Cold War geopolitics. He saw it as what it was: a living archive of the Nakba, a capsule of historical displacement, and a powder keg for future war. He captured not just the tents and the refugees, but the deep rhythm of Palestinian life under siege—where people raised children, worked the sea, worshiped, grieved, and endured.

And he was prophetic. In his opening lines, Duncan wrote:

It is a recurrent irony of history that big wars breed in little places. World War I had its Sarajevo, World War II its Danzig. The next war may well erupt from such a slender rectangle of rolling plain and naked desert as the Gaza Strip.

An area brought into being by the truce lines of the Arab-Israeli armistice of 1949, the Gaza Strip is only 25 miles long, an average of five miles wide. Its Egyptian military government rules an Arab population of around 312,000. Only 95,000 are original settlers. The rest are refugees, driven into Gaza’s sandy and desolate embrace by war in the Holy Land.

Gaza as an arena of man’s violence toward man goes back to earliest record. The Philistines operated from it against the Israelites. Here Samson brought down the temple in an epic finale. The Gaza road, an easy corridor between north and south, echoed to the pounding legions of the Pharaohs, of Babylon, Persia, Assyria, Alexander the Great, the Crusaders, the Turks and the British.

Today, once again, violence pervades Gaza. Its bitter spirit rides high in the people—the Arabs bereft of their homes, the Israelis within sighting distance across the mere furrow of the border. Its ugly outbreaks recur in ominous pattern: raids, fusillades, attacking patrols, casual deaths. No man can say when it might widen and overflow and engulf us all. (Collier’s, p. 57)

This metaphor—overflowing—is haunting in retrospect. Nearly 70 years later, Gaza is still overflowing: with displacement, grief, memory, resistance, and now rubble. In the past 18 months alone, the flood has indeed engulfed the region, and with it, global conscience. The nightmare Duncan foresaw—the one birthed from the ongoing Nakba—was never an isolated disaster. It was, and remains, a world-shaping force.

His essay, then, is not just a snapshot of Gaza in 1956. It is a warning that was not heeded. A document that did not disappear. A lens that still sees.

What follows is a guided walkthrough of Duncan’s photo essay as it appeared in Collier’s—with the full original text and captions preserved, and brief commentary to frame each section and its historical significance.

The Land

Introduction: This section introduces readers to Gaza’s terrain—harsh, sun-scorched, and overburdened. It captures the connection between land, sustenance, and resistance, emphasizing how limited resources and forced overcrowding shaped the political and human landscape.

Most of the Gaza Strip is barren, unrewarding land. The sun scorches and the rains seldom come. In the north are a few pockets of rich, dark soil in which grains and beans, orange and olive trees grow well. But the proportion of productive acreage is pathetically small, and the living correspondingly harsh.

On the plains stretching eastward to Beersheba, the late-afternoon sunlight turns the land into carpets of rich topaz and orange; the dusk turns it into magenta. So must Gaza have looked in Biblical days. Even the people seem the same: a gnarl-fingered, gold-turbaned patriarch still works for his daily bread by sifting grain kernels from trash; a Bedouin shepherd grazes his flock in a parched field of stubble; a peasant farmer walks his donkeys in eternal, pathless threshing circles.

The slim yield of Gaza’s earth—additionally burdened by the refugee influx—is responsible for much of its violence today. Israel complains of Arab infiltrators gleaning barley and reaping wheat. On the Gaza side of the border the land is cultivated right to the last inch short of the demarcation line. The Israelis have refrained from farming so close. To the Arabs, those untilled acres are almost as infuriating as the Israeli presence itself.

The Sea

Introduction: Gaza’s coastline has always been central to life and livelihood. Duncan’s lens captures not just fishermen and boats, but the militarization of the sea and how this traditional lifeline was turning into a theater of conflict.

Men of the Holy Land have always been men of the sea as well as men of the fields. For thousands of Palestinian years the Mediterranean—known to the ancients as the Great Sea—has been the bountiful provider for the people who dwell along its shores. Serene, benevolent, its slowly arching combers curving toward horizons far beyond any human vision, it has fashioned the very rhythm of life itself in Gaza.

From its deep waters, misty and blue at sunup, molten copper at sundown, the men of Gaza and their families have traditionally drawn livelihood and sustenance. The sea has given them an abundance of fish; it has even yielded up sand for the construction of their houses.

But these nights the sea of Gaza is a troubled sea. While its fishermen pursue their backbreaking work offshore, the slopes of its beaches are honeycombed with guns of the Egyptian coast artillery, and its dunes are patrolled by Sudanese cameleers on the watch for smugglers trying to break the blockade against Israel. At least temporarily, the quiet sea has fallen victim to the frailties of man.

The Refugees

Introduction: This section is the emotional core of Duncan’s photo essay. It documents the UN refugee camps, the unrelenting despair, the makeshift schools, and the simmering anger. His photographs humanize statistics and restore voice to the displaced.

Nothing is wasted in the Gaza Strip—nothing, that is, but life itself.

Of all the troubles in this troubled land, none is worse than the dilemma of the people: not only the refugees, torn from their moorings, still—after eight years—awaiting the day when they can “go home,” but also the original Gaza residents whose meager country they must now share.

For the 217,000 Arab refugees (more than double the number of natives) the United Nations Relief and Works Agency has set up eight camp communities—endless rows of hut-homes made of tiny concrete blocks with sheet-metal roofs. From UNRWA, too, the refugees get medical care, schooling, kerosene and blankets, and food, including flour, milk, sugar, rice, oils and fats.

But except for jobs in the camp administration, relief officials cannot provide the refugees with livelihoods. A lucky few work as cotton-yarn dyers or peddle goods along the main street of Gaza town. But there are 55,000 men of fifteen and over among the refugees. Most are without hope; few are without anger; and none without black frustration.

It is rumored that President Nasser of Egypt intends to form a Palestine Government-in-Refuge, elected from the refugees themselves. Until some such means is found to lift the spirit, the prolonged idleness of the able-bodied will remain perhaps the greatest single threat to peace in the Middle East.

What’s striking is how many of the questions this letter raises—about nationalism, colonialism, imperialism, and solidarity—still feel urgently relevant today. This text is particularly fascinating in that it captures the ongoing debate between Jews in the diaspora and those who were Zionist or supported the Zionist project in Palestine. It shows that, much like today, many Zionists were insistent on adopting a worldview rooted in creating a fortress in Palestine at any cost, often with little regard for the political rights and wellbeing of Palestinians and the people of the region as a whole. As we see in this letter, Jews in the diaspora who were critical of Zionism and the Zionist project were able to recognize—and even predict—that such policies and aims would create nothing but perpetual crisis and instability, endangering the lives of both Arabs and Jews.

Another important theme the letter captures is the author’s criticism of how the Zionists aligned themselves with British imperialism and colonial agendas—a theme that remains relevant today. I share this text because, in the midst of the ongoing major debates on these issues, I believe it is important to revisit how these questions were discussed and contested even before 1948. I found this letter to be a key example of such debates.

A Letter To A Zionist Friend

Dear Reuben,

I have been quite pained these days by events in Palestine—the death of innocent people and the growth of friction and animosity. If I have failed to answer your letter earlier it is not because I have been disinterested or far. You have questioned some of my fundamental attitudes towards the Jew and Palestine, and I have waited with my reply until I could muster up my wits and answer you adequately.

The acuteness of the Jewish situation the world over keeps me from viewing the Zionist question in relation to the Palestinian Yishub1 (Jewish population) alone. Any attempt at offering a plan of action to remedy the plight of the Jews today must take into consideration world Jewry in its entirety. To do this effectively we must be aware of what is happening in the world and we must have sufficient foresight to see how present world trends affect the life of the Jew. The period of isolation, of Galuth2 (diaspora) consciousness must come to an end. We are bound to relate our solution to the Jewish question with the general emerging tendencies in international affairs.

The World and the Jew

The major issues confronting the world scene today can be seen in terms of two primary and opposite lines of action—democracy and reaction. On the one hand there are the forces striving for the continuation and further development of democratic ideals and government; on the other hand there are the forces striving for the rule of the few and the submission of the majority of the people. These issues go beyond national barriers and group problems, they affect the lives of the people the world over, regardless of their beliefs. The material and cultural intercourse of people and the solution of the many specific problems facing different countries and groups are conditioned by the result of the development of these forces.

The Jews, as a minority group within the greater part of the countries of the world, are immediately affected by the result of the conflict of these two forces. What reaction and fascism have in store for us we well know. The plight of the Jews in Germany and Poland, for example, is by now stamped deep in the consciousness of every alert Jew in the world. Every victory of reaction spells defeat of the workers, the middle class and minority groups. Fascism, accentuating antagonisms, must embrace the most extreme methods to realize its aims, and the Jews are among the first to feel the brunt of Fascist or reactionary pre-Fascist manifestations.

The struggle for the emancipation of the Jew is not an isolated, sectarian one. It is one phase. of the struggle for the emancipation of mankind, a struggle that must be carried on by all the oppressed, the enslaved and dispossessed against the common oppressor. True democracy cannot be realized without the emancipation of minority groups, including the Jews. The emancipation of the Jew is impossible without the fulfillment of true democracy. These are two sides of the same coin. It is only under real democracy that the Jew docs not suffer social and economic discrimination. But democracy is not a static thing, copyrighted by professional politicians for their pre-election sermons. It was gained by the blood of people, and maintained by their toil.

The Jew has paid his due toll to reaction. The time has come for us to assert our full human rights. These rights of ours are now in immediate danger. Not only our future rights, but the rights we have already gained after long struggle, are menaced by undemocratic measures. It is our duty to ward off the inroads of reaction. It is our duty to check fascism before it spreads further into new grounds. This fight against reaction is the fight for democracy, our rights as Jews, and our future development. We must join our forces to other forces working for democracy and in this way assure our future existence as human beings and Jews.

The Jews are minority groups in the countries they live in. Their life is determined by the conditions prevailing in these countries. These conditions, in turn, are determined by world conditions. The world then is my point of departure. Only by knowing what is happening in the world can I approach the problem of the Jew. For this reason I have prefaced my remarks on the Zionist question with this short summary of the major forces operating in international life today. From this let us proceed to our own problems.

The Need for Unity

Reaction must be counteracted by a solid defense composed of the united forces of all those who are sincerely working for democracy. To check the growth of anti-Semitism, which is a concomitant of reaction—a common Jewish front should be created. Despite differences of opinion in our ranks, such a common front, through a broad unity of action, would protect all Jews, regardless of their opinions, by combatting anti-Semitism in a thorough and organized fashion.

Anti-Semitism is not merely a local manifestation aimed at the Jew alone. Anti-Semitism is but one manifestation of a more widespread movement. Its motives are deeper than mere dislike of a group for its peculiarities. A study of modern anti-Semitism shows that it gains ground where fascist elements flourish. The deep economic and social motives for the anti-Semitism of today must be taken into account. Anti-Semitism is the aspect of fascism that reveals itself to the Jew and to eliminate anti-Semitism we must eliminate the Fascist elements. But we are not the only ones to feel the blows of fascism. Workers, the middle class, professional men, different minority groups—in fact all but the very rich, the capitalists and the monopolists—are victims of fascism. The growth of anti-Semitism is as much their problem as ours, and to really safeguard ourselves, we must join forces with all the enemies of fascism.

Fascism Destroys the Jews

Our primary concern today should be with the alleviation of the difficulties facing world Jewry. Insofar as fascism increases, anti-Semitism increases, and active anti-Semitism endangers the material existence of vast bodies of Jews.

The figures recently brought out by Dr. Traub of Berlin, the director of the Palestine Foundation Fund of Germany, show the concrete danger facing the Jews by the growth of fascism. In about three and a half years the Jewish population in Germany has decreased 21 per cent. The actual ground has been taken away from under the feet of one-fifth of the German Jews. The remaining Jews in Germany have suffered drastic losses and inhuman persecution.

The Jews in Poland are in a miserable plight. Over 3,000,000 Jews are the direct object of a growing semi-Fascist anti-Semitic movement. It is difficult for us to even visualize how serious the situation in Poland is today. Figures for 1936 reveal that over 1,000 Jews were beaten and injured while 565 Jews were murdered. 137 Jewish stores were bombed. 35 Jewish homes were burned down. Aside from these direct attacks thousands are faced with economic destruction.

Fascism is beginning to show its true colors in relation to the Jew in Italy. The Popolo d'Italia, Premier Mussolini's personal newspaper, has followed the Rome Tevere and Cremona Regime Fascista, with vicious anti-Semitic attacks. Jews in Tripoli have been flogged.

In England, Mosley and his fascist followers have launched a Jew-baiting campaign.

De la Rocque and his crowd, in France, are a vicious menace to the Jewish population. Only the victory of the People's Front succeeded in warding off a movement that would have brought disaster to French Jewry.

One million Jews in Rumania are "menaced by anti-Semitic agitations and disorders" of a fascist nature.

A court in Vienna, Austria, divorced a non-Jew and a Jewess on the Nazi "ethnological" basis. This indicates to what an extent anti-Semitism has spread in Austria.

In the Province of Quebec, Canada, Jewish stores were attacked by Canadian nationalists.

In America, my dear Reuben, the stronghold of world Jewry, the situation is not as pleasant as we would like it to be. The activities of the Black Legion have been exposed. The Ku Klux Klan has resumed activities in the State of New York. A superficial glance through the last year's newspapers will reveal the existence of 25 known and active anti-Semitic organizations. Many anti-Semitic publications are being distributed widely.

Does Zionism Solve the Jewish Problem?

In the face of these immediate and acute problems, Reuben, we can no longer sit back and theorize, as was our wont. All of our views and beliefs have to be revaluated in the light of their practicability. With the world scene as tense as it is today, a solution is necessary that will embrace all these problems. In the light of these facts I have questioned the Zionist world view.

This rapid mention of obvious facts serves to remind us of the critical situation world Jewry is facing today. These problems cannot be overlooked nor can we remain inactive in the face of them.

The deepest significance of Zionism was its underlying motive, the emancipation of the Jew. As a mass movement, Zionism took on momentum after the Russian pogroms in the beginning of the twentieth century. Since then, conditions have changed, and Zionist ideology has changed. Its validity today as a Jewish world view, as a major solution to the Jewish problem can be measured only in relation to its efficiency in improving the social and economic position of the Jew. Unfortunately, Palestine cannot absorb all the Jews of the world. Even were its absorptive capacities greater than they are (and let us accept the views of the optimists) we could not transplant the Jews of the world into Palestine. Aside from being unable to absorb all the Jews of the world, Palestine cannot even absorb those suffering immediate difficulties. Assuming that the basic tenets of Zionism are correct, practically, Palestine cannot be of immediate assistance to thousands of Jews suffering from reaction. In addition to our interest in the Yishub in Palestine, we must have a positive program for the Jews in the diaspora. Zionism at this point fails and leaves the Jew to the mercy of chance. Zionism offers settlement in Palestine as the only solution to the Jewish question. In doing this it attracts the attention of the Jew to Palestine and by drawing his attention away, encourages a passivity and inactivity before the conditions brewing in the country in which he lives. Far from being beneficial to the Jew, such an attitude is extremely dangerous. It leaves the Jew a prey to his opponents in the diaspora. This criticism is not entirely new in our midst. The danger of this policy in relation to the work of the Zionist movement has been articulated by our labor Zionist friend, Ira Eisenstein, in an article entitled Labor Zionism and America (Jewish Frontier, August, 1936). He says:

“The League [for Labor Palestine] thus far has been influenced, subtly, by a mild version of that philosophy espoused by the "negators of the Galut.” Somehow, the League has been made to feel that Palestine is the be-all and end-all of Jewish life, and that the primary, if not the sole function of the diaspora is to advance the cause of Palestine's rebuilding.” (Italics mine.—B.D.)

This concentration on Palestine becomes more dangerous when we consider what an attitude it develops in relation to the specific country in which we live.

“The second circumstance, Eisenstein continues, has been the failure of the leaders to formulate a positive philosophy of Jewish life for the diaspora. The neglect to formulate such a philosophy has been evidenced by the comparative indifference which the League programs and publications have betrayed to vital problems of Jewish life in America. . . . The American scene is thus touched upon, when at all, at its sore spots. No program for their cure is offered, and the League members are unwittingly given to understand that, at best, the American scene is a sorry one, and at worst, unworthy of the kind of serious consideration and planning which Palestine requires and deserves. (Italics mine.— B.D.)”

Though Ira Eisenstein falls short of offering a plan of action for the American Jew he is on the right path when he says:

“The dilemma can be resolved only if the League ceases to conceive of Zionism—even Labor Zionism—as an isolated phenomenon in Jewish life. Palestine must henceforth be understood in terms of its organic relationship to the rest of Jewish life.“

This passive attitude to the Galuth instilled by the Zionists must be fought at every moment. It is one of the most serious blunders of the Zionist weltanschauung. Worse than this is the privately expressed attitude of high Zionist leaders. When these leaders gloat over the misfortunes of the Jew in countries outside of Palestine, they are no longer worthy of being called Jewish leaders. They go against the Jews in taking joy in the destruction of German Jewry, for example, thinking of the accelerated immigration that conditions in Germany will bring about. They violate the major Zionist principle, the emancipation of the Jew—by subtly wishing misfortune upon the Jews of the world, prophesying that they will never live in peace in the diaspora, that Palestine is their only hope and salvation. This is one of the signs of the corruption and decay infecting certain Zionist leaders. Allowed to follow their policies unchecked, such leaders mislead the Jewish masses whom they are supposed to represent.

Attempts at unifying the Jews better to withstand the growth of reaction have been made, but their importance is dwarfed by their deliberate discrimination and rejection of unity. The World Jewish Congress could have developed into a significant movement that would have been of importance to the Jews of the world. Its actions, however, from the very first meeting, belied its intentions. Instead of being an all-inclusive institution that would unify the different streams in Jewish life to face immediate problems, it chose from the beginning to exclude certain organized bodies of Jews. It is not a theoretical unity that we need today. The conditions of our life demand a unity of action. When this unity loomed up as an actual possibility, however, the instigators of the plan for Jewish unity turned away Jews who chose to cooperate and do their share in the struggle for the liberation of the Jew from his oppression.

The fact that the World Congress has chosen to narrow its effectiveness should not dishearten us. It can still be made into an important instrument in our struggle for basic human rights.

Zionism in Palestine

Zionism as a world view, as a school of Jewish thought that expresses attitudes about life in the diaspora embodies many weaknesses that must be eliminated. My greatest doubts are awakened about Zionism as a major solution to the Jewish question when I see the actual unfolding of Zionism in Palestine.

Before I can speak of Zionism at all I must distinguish between Zionists with their sincere motives, and political Zionism, with the results to which its policies lead. Zionism as a movement has tapped some of the noblest desires of the Jewish people. Its expansion is due primarily to the deep desire for emancipation and equality that the oppressed Jew began to express in the nineteenth century. Some of the most noteworthy Jews have upheld Zionism precisely because of their beliefs in the promises of emancipation offered by Zionism. The social, economic and political conditions that have given birth to Zionism as a mass movement have changed. The Zionist program, too, has changed. It is no longer a vague program aiming at the establishment of an abstract Jewish homeland. Zionism has achieved definite things, and its plan of action on the political and economic spheres is very definite. The time has come to revalue Zionism in the light of present-day conditions. The time has come to estimate what Zionism has already established in Palestine and what its aims will drive it to establish in the future.

The dawn of the twentieth century marks the beginning of serious Jewish immigration to Palestine. Since then Jewish attitudes to Palestine and Zionist political tactics have undergone many changes. The most significant change in Zionist tactics is the result of the conquest of Palestine by England. From this stage on, Zionist statesmanship has conducted itself on one major premise—the reliance on England for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. It is well at this time to reconsider the wisdom of this policy.

In your letters you constantly remind me of your awareness of British imperial policy, yet you maintain that the only hope of the Palestine Yishub is to depend on England for the furtherance of its interests. The actual tactics of British rule in Palestine are in themselves a most damning indictment of such dependence, but if deeds are not enough for you, let us study the explicit statement of British policy that has come to light within recent years.

The strategic significance of Palestine to the British Empire has long been known to you. Yet you have not taken this strategic significance into account as a motivating force in the determination of British policy. You have looked at it as a cause for England's attachment to Palestine, not as a reality that colors the complete administration of the mandate. Benefits to the Jew or Arab are determined by the immediate interests of England and her politics, not by the interests of the Palestinian population. A favorable attitude to the Jews is the result of strategic necessity.

Augur, the well informed British correspondent, says in the New York Times of January 19, 1936:

“Britain governs the country and the Jewish population represents an element which can supply -a guarantee of safety for the establishment of the air force. In the sea of the native population of Arabia the Palestinian Jews stand isolated, an outpost of Europe, and, if rightly handled, an element of strength for the empire. . . . Already the possibility is seen that the Jewish population will provide the physical force sufficient not only for its own protection but also for the defense of the Palestinian citadel against any foreseeable attack from outside. Military experts say a Jewish militia of 50,000 men may be a reality tomorrow.”

The more explicit statement of these immediate interests that England has to defend comes from Lord Melchett in a letter to the Daily Telegraph, of London, June 14, 1936:

“The advantages of the [Jewish National Home] to the British Empire are obvious. The points at issue are no less than the defense of the Suez Canal, of air stations essential to Imperial communications, and the outlet of the oil pipe line in Haifa; and the harbour at Haifa (and later the harbour which is necessary at Tel-Aviv) have become vital to our naval strategy in the Mediterranean. The security of this complex of Imperial interests can be better assured by a large European population than by the few battalions that can be spared.”

The relationship between Imperial interests, needs and policy in Palestine are very evident. England will support that group in Palestine that can best assure the protection of her interests. As such, it is a most insecure and uncertain source of protection.

Further, the strategic significance of Palestine does not diminish but increases with time, and its major significance will be realized only in the future. This is clearly brought out by Amery, the imperialist politician, in his recent book, The Forward View. Speaking of Palestine he says:

“This whole region forms a single political and strategic problem, perhaps the most important of any to which our policy can direct itself in the near future. The key position of the whole of the region is Palestine, which covers the Suez Canal from the north and from which start the air route and future railway route from the Mediterranean to India . . it is within this zone that an ever-increasing proportion of our first line Air Force should be stationed. Palestine is the strategical air centre of our Empire defense.”

As the strategic center of the Empire defense, Palestine assumes an ever growing importance, and England will ensure her imperial policy more openly and with greater ruthlessness. And both the Jew and the Arab in Palestine will bear the brunt of this policy.

The tendency of our Zionist leaders to overlook the implications of important statements and the developments in world politics since the Mandate, endangers the lives and security of the Jewish masses in Palestine. The time has come to be aware of the basic issues. England has vast interests in Palestine. She will protect these interests at any cost. To rely on England is folly that can bring only evil to the masses of Jews in Palestine.

We still refer to the Balfour Declaration as proof of the humaneness of England and as proof of the fact that England, recognized the "Jewish cause" and legalized it in the eyes of the world. England's deeds and statements have belied this constantly. Lloyd George's statement in Parliament during the Palestine debate completely shatters these illusions. The Declaration was another one of those English maneuvers to safeguard her own immediate interests, and if the Mandate stands in opposition to her future interests the Mandate will not be. Greater violations of agreements in international relations have been realized within the past few years. Lloyd George openly said:

“The obligations of the Mandate are specific and definite. They are to encourage the establishment of a national home for the Jews without detriment to any of the rights of the Arab population. I agree that it is a dual undertaking, and we must see that both parts of the Mandate are thoroughly enforced. But look at the conditions under which we entered into it. It was one of the darkest periods of the War when Mr. Balfour prepared his Declaration. Let me recall the circumstances to the House. At the time the French army had mutinied, the Italian army was on the eve of collapse and America had hardly started preparing in earnest. There was nothing left but Britain confronting the most powerful military combination the world has ever seen. It was important for us to seek every legitimate help we could get. We came to the conclusion, from information we received from every part of the world, that it was vital we should have the sympathies of the Jewish community. I can assure the committee that we did not come to that conclusion from any predilections or prejudices against the Arabs because at that moment we had hundreds of thousands of troops fighting for Arab emancipation from the Turk. In these circumstances and on the advice which we received we decided that it was desirable to secure the sympathy and co-operation of that most remarkable community, the Jews throughout the world. They were helpful in America and in Russia, which at that moment was just walking out and leaving us alone. In these conditions we pro-posed this to our Allies. France accepted it, Italy accepted it, and the United States accepted it and all the other allies accepted it, and all the nations which constitute the League of Nations accepted it. And the Jews—I am here to bear testimony to the fact—with all the influence they possess responded nobly to the appeal which was made.”

The true causes that gave birth to the Balfour Declaration and the Mandate are revealed in no uncertain terms: a military tactic, in a time of need, that was of great help to Britain and the Allies. To build on this as a safeguard for future activity is fool's play.

Further on in his speech, however, Lloyd George asserts that Britain must carry out the Mandate. "It is an obligation of honour which we undertook, to which the Jews responded. We cannot get out of it without dishonour."

The assurance with which he can demand the fulfillment of the "obligation of honour" comes out of an awareness that the Mandate now has no actual meaning as a tool in the hands of Britain. The policy Britain has followed and intends to follow with regard to the Mandate was clearly enunciated by former Premier MacDonald in his letter to Dr. Chaim Weizmann of February 13, 1931. In speaking of the policy of the mandate, he said:

“In carrying out the policy of the mandate the mandatory cannot ignore the existence of the differing interests and viewpoints. These, indeed, are not in themselves irreconcilable, but they can only be reconciled if there is a proper realization that the full solution of the problem depends upon an understanding between the Jews and the Arabs. Until that is reached, considerations of balance must inevitably enter into the definition of policy.”(Italics mine.—B.D.)

Translated into simple language this means that British policy in Palestine is to be based on the presumption that there are two hostile groups in Palestine, the Jews and the Arabs, each with separate and conflicting interests. The determination of policy is to be based not on the needs of the people of Palestine, needs shared in common by both Jews and Arabs, for the benefit of the country as a whole, but policy is to be determined so as to maintain a balance of concessions to Jews and Arabs, thus arousing a greater animosity between the groups and prolonging their state of conflict. To our misfortune, Zionist leaders have fallen into the error of evaluating the Palestinian scene in this light and have depended upon British sup-port to help them wage a "battle" against the Arabs. Such a policy can only lead to greater and greater racial conflict as is evidenced by the repeated outbursts of 1921, 1929 and finally 1936. To depend upon Britain, the cause of these conditions, to eliminate them is an error of the gravest sort. The question of the Jews' attitude to Britain must be carefully determined. The tendency of certain Zionist leaders to embrace openly the support of British imperialism is a betrayal of the interests of the Jewish masses in Palestine. That such a state of mind has overtaken certain of our leaders and journalists is clearly seen in the following statement from the "Digest of the Palestinian Press" in the Palestine Review of August 21, 1936.

“Despite our disappointment, there is no question but that we are pro-British. Of any form of Imperialism—European or Arab—we unhesitatingly choose the British. Therefore we are profoundly concerned for the prestige of British Imperialism, and therefore we offer ourselves in its service. “ (Italics mine.-B.D. Quoting M. Carmon writing in Hadashoth Ahronoth.)

In relying upon Britain for Jewish achievement in Palestine we have only one guarantee, that Britain will follow a sure course of benefit to Britain. and detriment to Jew and Arab alike.

Arab-Jewish Relations

As a consequence of this alignment with the British attitude to Jew and Arab, the attitude of our Zionist leaders to the Arab in Palestine is wrong. The whole question is falsely stated, and as you may see from the following quotations, can only lead to antagonism and further outbursts of hatred.

Davar places the entire responsibility of Arab-Jewish relations on the Arab, and maintains that the Arab must make peace with the Jew.

When will this anti-Jewish siege cease? Davar (the labor daily) sardonically gauges the temper of the Yishub (Jewish settlement) by answering. "Not until the strength of the enemy is broken. Not until Jewish numbers become so large that enemies will realize all attacks are vain. Not until the most brazen extremist in the Arab camp comprehends that none of his efforts can really destroy Jewry in its homeland and that the Arab therefore must make peace with the jew." (Jewish Frontier, August, 1936.)

And this presumably is the attitude of a labor daily which speaks of its friendship to the Arab.

Even more illuminating aspects of this attitude are revealed in some of the answers to the questionnaire of the Palestine Review in its issue of July 3, 1936.

Menahem Ussishkin in answering questions 2, 3 and 4: Do you think that it is possible for Jews and Arabs to arrive at an agreement? If not, why? If so, what are the indispensable conditions for a Jewish-Arab peace? replies:

“Certainly, but only when the Arabs are faced by a fait accompli—that is to say, when the Jews are no longer a minority in the country; and full and complete rights for all inhabitants in the country without distinction of race, religion or language.”

In other words, peace is impossible until the Jews are a majority in the country. His answer to question 6 shows how definitely Ussishkin is playing for British support and friendship.

“How will Britain's Mediterranean policy be affected by:

a) An exclusively Arab Palestine?

b) A Jewish-Arab Palestine?

A Palestine which is wholly Arabic, means that sooner or later, in the course of time, England will be forced to leave Palestine, just as it is gradually leaving Egypt. A Palestine which is largely Jewish, means a political alliance cordiale for very many generations between the Jewish people throughout the world and in Palestine, and the English.”

Labor Zionists and General Zionists are in agreement on two major points of Zionist political policy in Palestine. (1) A community of interest between Zionism and British imperialism. (2) Arab-Jewish cooperation is possible if the Arabs understand that Zionism will have a "Jewish Homeland" in Palestine regardless of the Arabs, and consequently it is best for the Arabs to forget any specific interests they may have and work with the Jews for a Jewish majority. Such a conception of Arab-Jewish relations, with all the peace talk that may accompany it, can only bring further conflict. Such conditions naturally undermine the work and hopes of the Jewish masses in Palestine.

With the recent publication of Jews and Arabs in Palestine by our Labor Zionist friends, a 315 page volume dealing with Arab-Jewish relations in Palestine, edited by Enzo Sereni and R. E. Asheri, I naively expected a clearer and more understanding statement, knowing that even such a statement wouldn't change the political tactics of our leaders. Yet, to my great surprise, even here they can present no more than a blunt statement of their own interests, without any real program for possible peace and cooperation. The last few pages of the volume embody a "Summary—The Problem and its Solution" by Alexander S. Kohanski, and it is most revealing to see in what terms Zionism sees a possible reconciliation with the Arabs. Kohanski says:

“It is the concurrent opinion of all the writers in the present volume that it is incumbent upon the Jews to take the initiative in a rapprochement with the Arabs. We must realize that the Arabs, especially the Arab masses, are not aware of the real intent of our reconstruction work in Palestine; they are not even fully aware of the benefits, economic as well as political, that have accrued to them as a result of our colonization. We must, therefore, find a way of coming to an understanding with them and of convincing them of our common interests. The question, however, is what should be the initial step and through what avenues can this rapprochement be most effectively accomplished. In the correct answer to this question lies the solution to the entire problem. There are two views on this question. The one stresses our common interests with the Arabs, and the other, our common interests with the British. The pivot around which both these views turn is Jewish mass immigration. Bringing large numbers of our people into Palestine is first of all a necessity for our masses in the Diaspora who are seeking a haven of refuge, and in that sense is a pre-requisite for the establishment of our national homeland. But increasing our numbers in Palestine is also a condition of coming to an agreement with our Arab neighbors. A larger and stronger Jewish Yishub would convince the Arabs that it may not be safe to attack us again and that it would be much wiser to come to terms with us. We would, then, be able to start negotiations with them and by showing our strength, we would at the same time be able to show them wherein our common interests lie. The Arabs would realize that an alliance with a strong Jewish Yishub would be politically, as well as economically, advantageous to them.” (pp. 309-310; italics mine. —B.D.)

In other words, the initial step for the Jews to take towards an Arab-Jewish rapprochement is for the Jews to increase in strength, threaten with a mighty fist, ultimately become a majority and tell the Arabs to follow the Jews or shut up. I need not tell you, Reuben, that this is no ground for unity or rapprochement, and in taking such a stand Zionist leadership is actually betraying our Yishub in Palestine.

It becomes increasingly clearer that Jewish settlement in Palestine is impossible without a reorientation of Zionist political views. First and foremost we must cease to offer ourselves as the guardians of British imperialism in the Near East. Secondly, we must restate the whole question of Arab—Jewish relations, and as a result we must make an active move to reach a degree of understanding and cooperation with the Arabs.

One of the greatest blows to unity was the reference to the recent outbursts in Palestine as "anti-Jewish riots." The statement of no less a Zionist than M. Y. Ben-Gavriel points out the falsity of this statement. He says:

“First, let us avoid any collective reference to "the Arabs." The early days of the troubles clearly proved that one cannot say that "the Arabs are anti-Jewish" or that "the Arabs killed Jews in Jaffa." In many places this generalization proved false; cases occurred in which Arabs rescued hard-pressed Jews at the risk of their own safety. Further evidence is to be found in the friendliness of many fellahin who visited Jewish villages to denounce the barbarities in Jaffa. The Beduins at Migdal, led astray by the rumour that their two children had been kidnapped, apologized later for their attack upon Jewish workmen. Similar apologies were rendered elsewhere.” ("Peace instead of Truce." Palestine Review, July 3, 1936.)

We must be aware of the fact that the violence manifested in Palestine during the recent strike was primarily anti-British, a fact which was defin-itely recognized in the Parliamentary Debate. The list of casualities given by the British Government in London on October 29, 1936, clarifies this situation.

Arabs, 955, including 187 dead.

Jews, 388, including 80 dead.

We must certainly condemn anarchic attacks upon people and property, but the motive of the struggle of the Arabs was anti-British. By heaping tirades against the Arabs and by accusing them of anti-Jewish attacks we are falsifying the scene.

I have written at such great length only to clarify my present attitudes and to express my criticism of Zionist tactics and leadership today. As one who is deeply attached to the Jewish Yishub in Palestine I must express my extreme disfavor with the turn of events in Palestine. Only when Zionist leadership will abandon its pro-British policies and will realize that the solution of the Jew in Palestine lies in cooperation and unity with the Arab on equal grounds, will the safety of the Jewish Yishub be ensured.

When Israel was established in the Nakba of 1948, it was built on top of 78% of historic Palestine, destroying more than 500 Palestinian towns and villages and forcefully displacing more than 750,000 people.

But one small strip of land remained beyond the Israeli conquest.

It was just a fraction of what had been taken by Zionist militias, but this small territory of 140 square miles — the Gaza Strip — would emerge not only as a site of resistance to Zionism, but as a force that would challenge colonialism, imperialism and apartheid both globally and locally.

It is, as Palestinian storyteller Mahmoud Darwish would write in the poem “Silence for Gaza,” translated from the Arabic by Sinan Antoon, equal to “the history of an entire homeland, because it is more ugly, impoverished, miserable and vicious in the eyes of enemies.”

“Because it is the most capable, among us,” Darwish wrote, “of disturbing the enemy’s mood and his comfort.”

Of the total number of Palestinians displaced in 1948 by Zionist militias — which carried out massacres and atrocities across historic Palestine — 250,000 were forced from their homes into what would later become the Gaza Strip. This changed the demographics and social structure as the displaced Palestinians joined existing residents.

The borders of the Gaza Strip, originally drawn as cease-fire lines following the Arab-Israeli War of 1948, were not considered official borders, even by the warring parties. What those demarcations did was sever Gaza from the rest of Palestine and cause unprecedented fragmentation geographically, economically, socially and culturally.

In 1955, Palestinian author Khalil Totah published the findings of his visit to Gaza to document the devastating economic collapse the city faced. Once a thriving agricultural hub, Gaza’s wheat and barley fields, which stretched to Beersheba, were gone, along with its orange groves in villages like Dayr Sunayd and Hiribya. The olive orchards, fruit and vegetable gardens and all other sources of sustenance had been stripped away.

Once a bustling marketplace which connected villages and nomads, Gaza lost its vital trade. Its streets, once filled with commerce, left the city an economic void. Describing the depth of the suffering, Totah wrote: ​“The inhabitants of Gaza seemed to be in a concentration camp or perhaps in a tomb. The atmosphere was most depressing, yet the people are bravely carrying on. It is a siege, indeed, and life is on a day-to-day basis.”

It is impossible to see the Gaza Strip as anything but Israel’s creation, driven by a violent, organized campaign of geographic and demographic reengineering. This dynamic continues today: Israel as the colonizer, violently clashing with Palestinians as the colonized, forming the central drive and argument at the heart of this continuation of the 76-year-old Nakba.

At its core, the Palestinian struggle today is not only about defending the rights of the Palestinian people; it has a universal dimension and deep global implications, all of which are playing out in the Gaza Strip.

Palestine has become a crucial battleground in the confrontation against the marriage of traditional colonial visions — like those that shaped the history of the United States and allowed the Israeli settler-colonial model to metastasize in its most extreme form — and the 21^st-century agenda of political exclusion that strips human and civil rights from large, disadvantaged groups.

This colonial approach fundamentally relies on dehumanization to justify the extermination, the isolation, or the complete or partial denial of the fundamental human rights of the colonized.
